Policy: Sierra Club took millions from natural gas fracking supporter

US Department of Energy
Sierra Club took millions from natural gas fracking supporter by James Bruggers

Well, well. So the Sierra Club's campaign to end coal was substantially supported by a natural gas company CEO involved in the controversial practice called fracking. The club's Beyond Coal campaign is very active in Kentucky.

Bryan Walsh of TIME has the report, here, in what's as an exclusive. The report says the organization has since stopped taking the money:
TIME has learned that between 2007 and 2010 the Sierra Club accepted over $25 million in donations from the gas industry, mostly from Aubrey McClendon, CEO of Chesapeake Energy - one of the biggest gas drilling companies in the U.S. and a firm heavily involved in fracking - to help fund the Club's Beyond Coal campaign. Though the group ended its relationship with Chesapeake in 2010 - and the Club says it turned its back on an additional $30 million in promised donations - the news raises concerns about influence industry may have had on the Sierra Club's independence and its support of natural gas in the past. It's also sure to anger ordinary members who've been uneasy about the Club's relationship with corporations. "The chapter groups and volunteers depend on the Club to have their back as they fight pollution from any industry, and we need to be unrestrained in our advocacy," Michael Brune, the Sierra Club's executive director since 2010, told me. "The first rule of advocacy of is that you shouldn't take money from industries and companies you're trying to change."
Natural gas has been seen by many as a bridge from dirty coal to renewable sources and perhaps less of a threat to the climate. While its clear that natural gas power plants emit fewer pollutants, and less carbon dioxide, a more thorough analysis has led to questions as to whether burning more gas instead of coal will help the climate.

Maybe this news about Sierra Club funding choices helps explain the departure of Carl Pope atop the Sierra Club

US: Bank Bailout 2: Obama Lets Mortgage Abusers Off the Hook

Feb. 9, 2012: Bank Bailout 2: Obama Lets Mortgage Abusers Off the Hook - CommonDreams.org

"Obama’s people have performed this function for America’s looters over and over again. They did it for Wall Street, the banks, the rich tax evaders, the insurance companies, the oil companies, the gas companies, the coal companies, the CIA, the DoD, and numerous torturers and their legal/policy enablers and associated war criminals in the previous administration."

The Obama Administration has followed a predictable pattern: Leave No One Accountable

The Obama administration announced this morning that the five largest U.S. banks have agreed to a $26 billion 'settlement' to end lawsuits over abusive practices that forced millions of families from their homes and helped bring about the nation’s financial meltdown.

After months of talks with state and federal officials, the banks have reportedly agreed to help some homeowners reduce their mortgage debt or refinance their homes at lower rates. Over 4 million familes lost their homes to foreclosure yet just 750,000 people who lost their homes to foreclosure will receive a one-time check for just $1,800 to $2,000, which for many will barely cover the cost of moving. The deal will only help a fraction of the struggling homeowners affected by the bank’s practices.

New York and California have reportedly signed off on the deal after initially holding it up in protest of lenient treatment of the banks.

The deal gives banks immunity from civil lawsuits for "robosigning," a practice whereby homeowners were rapidly evicted without proper vetting.

In his January 24th State of the Union address, President Obama promised a fresh investigation into mortgage abuses that led to the financial meltdown. Now, before that investigation has even begun, Obama is granting these 5 "too big to fail" banks immunity from "robo-signing" abuses.

Research: Common Food Items Could Contain 180 Times More Fluoride Than Tap Water

Common Food Items Could Contain 180 Times More Fluoride Than Tap Water by Anthony Gucciardi

Fluoridated tap water and toothpaste are oftentimes considered the main sources of fluoride exposure, but it turns out that common food items could also be largely contributing to your fluoride intake.

According to fluoride expert, Jeff Green, who has been actively protesting and studying the effects of fluoride on the body for other 15 years, one common food product contains up to 180 times more fluoride than your fluoridated tap water!

Ad
According to Green, the culprit is non-organic food, but not just one kind.

If you’re still eating conventionally-farmed food products, you may be unknowingly exposing yourself to extreme levels of fluoride. Green says this is made possible by fluoride going incognito within the food supply in a very concerning way:
'Cryolite is actually sodium aluminum fluoride… This sodium aluminum fluoride is especially effective at killing bugs,' Green says. 'It’s also very sticky, so when they spray it, it’s more likely to stick on your produce, unless you’re… really working at trying to get it off of it.'
Fluoride-Based Pesticide Contaminating Food Staples

While Green states that a large number of non-organic produce items can contain shocking levels of this fluoride-based pesticide, iceberg lettuce may be one of the largest offenders. In fact, iceberg lettuce can now be laced with a startling 180 parts per million (ppm) of fluoride – 180 times higher than the ‘recommended’ water fluoridation level. This ‘health’ food could actually be corroding your body with heavy levels of fluoride. But what other seemingly-healthy produce items contain high amounts of fluoride?

  • Citrus fruits are actually allowed to contain 95 ppm of sodium fluoride.
  • Potatoes can have as much as 22 ppm on the outside, and 2 ppm inside.
  • Raisins are allowed 55 ppm.
Fluoride has been linked to decreased IQ in children, and even the United States government is calling for lower levels of fluoride to be added to United States water supplies.

Perhaps the next big hurdle in the fight against fluoride will be within the food industry.

US: The Economics of Incarceration

© James Nachtwey / VII
The Economics of Incarceration by Nile Bowie

"Conglomerates such as IBM, Boeing, Motorola, Microsoft, AT&T, Wireless, Texas Instrument, Dell, Compaq, Honeywell, Hewlett-Packard, Nortel, Lucent Technologies, 3Com, Intel, Northern Telecom, TWA, Nordstrom's, Revlon, Macy's, Pierre Cardin, Victoria’s Secret, and Target have all begun mounting production operations in US prisons."

For anyone paying attention, there is no shortage of issues that fundamentally challenge the underpinning moral infrastructure of American society and the values it claims to uphold. Under the conceptual illusion of liberty, few things are more sobering than the amount of Americans who will spend the rest of their lives in an isolated correctional facility – ostensibly, being corrected. The United States of America has long held the highest incarceration rate in the world, far surpassing any other nation. For every 100,000 Americans, 743 citizens sit behind bars. Presently, the prison population in America consists of more than six million people, a number exceeding the amount of prisoners held in the gulags of the former Soviet Union at any point in its history.

While miserable statistics illustrate some measure of the ongoing ethical calamity occurring in the detainment centers inside the land of the free, only a partial picture of the broader situation is painted. While the country faces an unprecedented economic and financial crisis, business is booming in other fields – namely, the private prison industry. Like any other business, these institutions are run for the purpose of turning a profit. State and federal prisons are contracted out to private companies who are paid a fixed amount to house each prisoner per day. Their profits result from spending the minimum amount of state or federal funds on each inmate, only to pocket the remaining capital. For the corrections conglomerates of America, prosperity depends on housing the maximum numbers of inmates for the longest potential time - as inexpensively as possible.

By allowing a profit-driven capitalist-enterprise model to operate over institutions that should rightfully be focused on rehabilitation, America has enthusiastically embraced a prison industrial complex. Under the promise of maintaining correctional facilities at a lower cost due to market competition, state and federal governments contract privately run companies to manage and staff prisons, even allowing the groups to design and construct facilities. The private prison industry is primarily led by two morally deficient entities, the Corrections Corporation of America (CCA) and the GEO Group (formerly Wackenhut Corrections Corporation).  These companies amassed a combined revenue of over $2.9 billion in 2010, not without situating themselves in the center of political influence.

Local: Florida Republican Stripped Of Senate Chairmanship For Opposing Prison Privatization Scheme

Florida state Sen. Mike Fasano (R)
Florida Republican Stripped Of Senate Chairmanship For Opposing Prison Privatization Scheme by Marie Diamond

The biggest critic of a massive prison privatization scheme in Florida was stripped of his chairmanship of the Budget Subcommittee on Criminal and Civil Justice Appropriation for opposing Gov. Rick Scott’s (R) plan to outsource prison oversight to the lowest bidder.

Sen. Mike Fasano (R) is one of ten Senate Republicans who opposes the plan to give private, for-profit vendors control over 26 prisons, but his vocal criticism provoked retribution from one of the bill’s biggest supporters, Senate President Mike Haridopolos (R):
Amid the mounting tension, Senate President Mike Haridopolos refused to bring up the bill for debate, a sign that it faced defeat. Ten of 28 Senate Republicans have voiced strong reservations or opposition to such a major policy shift, a serious rift in the GOP caucus.

The drama intensified as Haridopolos stripped Sen. Mike Fasano, R-New Port Richey, of his chairmanship of a budget subcommittee overseeing prisons, saying Fasano “was not rowing in the same direction” as Senate leaders on budget decisions.

“It’s become clear to me that Sen. Fasano was not willing to make these choices,” Haridopolos said.

Fasano said Haridopolos told him he was being punished for his anti-privatization comments in an MSNBC interview Monday.
This week Fasano introduced an amendment that would effectively stop the plan and require further study on its fiscal impact. Critics of the plan say that it will save little if any money and cost thousands of state workers their jobs. The price of paying the displaced prison workers for unused sick leave and vacation could well offset the estimated $16 – $30 million in savings. “It’s really just a gift to the private-prison industry,” David Murrell of the Police Benevolent Association said of the plan.

Yet Haridopolos claimed he outed Fasano because he had “lost confidence in him to fulfill [the] mission” of balancing the budget and not raising taxes because Fasano raised concerns about the real cost of prison privatization.

Last year a judge threw out a similar plan because proponents tried to sneak it into the budget, but Republican sponsors have revived the bill. And they have a clear personal interest in fighting so hard. The country’s biggest private prison companies, who stand to make millions from the Florida plan, have given generously to many state legislators.

GEO Group, a private prison company based in Boca Raton and one of the largest contributors to the Florida Republican Party in 2010, gave over $11,000 to the campaigns of 14 of the 20 members of the Budget Committee that approved the privatization bill. They also gave the maximum $25,000 to Gov. Scott’s inaugural fund.

The Corrections Corporation of America, the nation’s largest corrections company, also has close connections to GOP statehouses across the country. The company has spent $373,000 in political contributions in Florida since 2003, over 60 percent of which have gone to Republicans.

US: You Can't Pay Your Mortgage With That, But You Can Buy a Big Mac? Bank of America Goes Berserk

Bank of America Refuses Cash for Mortgage Payment

In another example that we appear to be rapidly moving into a cashless society, Bank of America in California refused to accept cash for a mortgage payment. The manager of the bank said it was against their policy to accept legal tender physical currency (aka U.S. dollars) as payment for BoA mortgages.

The customer attempting to pay his mortgage, firefighter Robert Somerton, recorded the ordeal in Lakeport branch which made the bank manager so upset that he called the police. The police detained Somerton for a half hour before releasing him with a warning that he may never return to that BoA branch or he'll be arrested.

"I was shocked. I had no idea this would happen. Since when does a bank not accept cash?" Robert wrote after the affair.

Somerton and his wife, Ana, are victims of fraudclosure and have become the activists known as Rob and Ana vs Bank of America.  At the height of their foreclosure struggle, they made news when they threatened to bulldoze their home leaving Bank of America a "smoldering pile of debris."

Watch the rest of the exchange here.

Comment: The falsified credit systems are being destroyed by the insolvency of the terrorist banks who are attempting to sustain the illusion that cash must only exist within that faltering system which has destroyed life for decades and removed the true values in society. There is no cashless society, it is rather a trick to accommodate the 1% and their continued hegemony and to move this concept to the brain for implant and a world slave currency.

Bird Population in Massive Descent Near Fukushima - CommonDreams.org

Study: Many species show “dramatically” elevated DNA mutation rates, developmental abnormalities and extinctions

An upcoming study shows the future for birds and insect life around Fukushima has been badly damaged, an ominous sign of things to come.

The study, set to be published next week in Environmental Pollution, looked at 14 species of birds common to Fukushima and Chernobyl. David McNeill writes in the Irish Times:
Researchers working in the irradiated zone around the disabled Fukushima nuclear plant say bird populations there have begun to dwindle, in what may be a chilling harbinger of the impact of radioactive fallout on local life.

In the first major study on the impact of the world’s worst nuclear crisis in 25 years, the researchers from Japan, the US and Denmark say that analysis of 14 species of birds common to Fukushima and Chernobyl shows the effect on numbers is worse in the Japanese disaster zone. [..]

Timothy Mousseau and Anders Pape Moller say their research there uncovered major negative effects among the local bird population, including reductions in longevity, male fertility and birds with smaller brains.
Many species show “dramatically” elevated DNA mutation rates, developmental abnormalities and extinctions, they add, while insect life has been significantly reduced.

Japanese researchers began studying flora and fauna around Fukushima in November, with an initial report on the findings expected in March.

US: Crops being sprayed with MSG, glutamic acid as chemical growth enhancers

Crops being sprayed with MSG, glutamic acid as chemical growth enhancers by PF Louis

(NaturalNews) Many Natural News readers know of government requirements for irradiating raw almonds and herbs, destroying their nutritional value, under the guise of food safety. This and pasteurizing milk are but two examples of how federal agencies are destroying our food's nutrition.

Not so many health conscious consumers know of crops being sprayed with the essence of MSG, glutamic acid or free glutamates. Emerald BioAgriculture got EPA approval to allow use of their growth enhancer AuxiGro on crops in all states. They are trying to get approval for using AuxiGro on organic crops as well (http://www.naturalnews.com/026157_MSG_food_organic.html).

The USDA's certified organic seal only qualifies the method of agriculture used. The certification doesn't cover crops after they are harvested, and USDA certification offers no guarantee of the absence of GMO contamination or MSG.

Other ways they're messing with our food for our safety

Realityblogger journalist Clint Richardson has come up with an extensively detailed report, "Dude, That Isn't Wax On Your Apple!" (Source below). It covers the most current hidden methods of preserving fresh fruits and vegetables, which are based on the concept of modified atmospheric packaging or MAP.

Atmospheric air's normal balance is nitrogen (78%), oxygen (21%), carbon dioxide (.03-.05%) with the rest being noble gases that include helium, argon, and four other gases. This balance is slightly altered to retard spoilage during travel time and extend the shelf life of fresh produce, especially the cut, cleaned, and packaged variety.

MAP slightly alters this normal balance of the immediate atmosphere with fruits or vegetables prior to or as a part of its packaging. This is not about the bags or baggies, or even shrink wrapping, although most of all cut packaged fruits and vegetables are MAP processed..

The fact that an edible organism is cut and sold as fresh seems to make MAP procedures necessary, at least according to marketing needs.

The myriad methods of MAP

Clint Richardson's report is detailed to the max with chemical names and FDA quotes (Sources below). This is merely a summary of what he covered. Prior to MAP, controlled atmosphere storage (CAS) was more common. Film coating produce is not done with CAS.

But with MAP, all sorts of ingenious methods have been created. There's passive MAP, which remains the same at all times, and active MAP, which actually senses temperature changes and adjusts its atmosphere within the invisible, edible coating.

Edible does not mean nutritious (http://www.naturalnews.com/033767_cellulose_food.html).

Plasticizers are used in addition to gelatins (processed from animals) for dipping or spraying those veggies. Vegans beware! Some procedures coat produce with smart films, which are supposed to warn food handlers in the distribution chain of early spoilage. This may appear benign, but read on.

Richardson cited the FDA's own commentary on the possibility that MAP coatings could offer breeding environments for pathogens as a downside. Thus the lack of spoilage can mask some nasty pathogenic life growing within. The FDA neither approves nor disapproves of all this, however.

Richardson observed that many past episodes of vegetables causing various food borne diseases were of the packaged cut and MAP coated variety. Despite this, none of the MAP possibilities were mentioned in the mainstream media. Guess that's Big Ag's dirty little secret, protected by the FDA.

Better to stick with trusted organic, bulk whole veggies and fruits. Here's a short video of a woman pealing film off a lettuce leaf purchased from a grocery chain store (http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=Vv-upmzkiHk).

Research: Cell Phone-Induced Bodily Harm: How The Bees Can Help

Cell Phone-Induced Bodily Harm: How The Bees Can Help by Sayer Ji

"Surprisingly, the little known bee product known as propolis exhibits powerful protective action against cell-phone induced damage to a variety of organs, including the kidney, heart and brain.

Cell phones and the communications infrastructure that makes them possible, are ubiquitous today, making complete avoidance of their radiation next to impossible.  Plenty of evidence already exists showing that cell phones emit a type of electromagnetic radiation -- in the microwave range -- capable of adversely affecting a wide range of organs, with the nervous system of those exposed perhaps most sensitive to its adverse effects. Below is a sampling of some of their adverse health effects as demonstrated in the biomedical literature.

Liver Damage Fetal Harm Kidney Damage
Interruption of Sleep Heart Damage Acoustic Neuroma
REM Cycle Disruption Head Tumors

New research indicates that the problems associated with cell phone radiation exposure are far more profound that previously believed.  In fact, pregnant women may need to exercise additional caution in order to protect their unborn from adverse neurological effects associated with cell phone radiation exposure.

In a study entitled "The influence of microwave radiation from cellular phone on fetal rat brain," and published in the journal Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine on Jan. 23rd 2012, researchers discovered that pregnant rats exposed to microwave radiation from cellular phones had fetuses whose brains showed signs of harm, as measured by enhanced oxidative stress and altered levels of neurotransmitters.

US: Debt Collapse: Economics Lesson 1

Jan. 31, 2012: Economics Lesson 1 by Paul Craig Roberts

Last Friday (January 27) the US Bureau of Economic Analysis announced its advance estimate that in the last quarter of 2011 the economy grew at an annual rate of 2.8% in real inflation-adjusted terms, an increase from the annual rate of growth in the third quarter.

Good news, right?

Wrong. If you want to know what is really happening, you must turn to John Williams at shadowstats.com.

What the presstitute media did not tell us is that almost the entire gain In GDP growth was due to “involuntary inventory build-up,” that is, more goods were produced than were sold.

Net of the unsold goods, the annualized real growth rate was eight-tenths of one percent.

And even that tiny growth rate is an exaggeration, because it is deflated with a measure of inflation that understates inflation. The US government’s measure of inflation no longer measures a constant standard of living. Instead, the government’s inflation measure relies on substitution of cheaper goods for those that rise in price. In other words, the government holds the measure of inflation down by measuring a declining standard of living. This permits our rulers to divert cost-of-living-adjustments that should be paid to Social Security recipients to wars of aggression, police state, and banker bailouts.

When the methodology that measures a constant standard of living is used to deflate nominal GDP, the result is a shrinking US economy. It becomes clear that the US economy has had no recovery and has now been in deep recession for four years despite the proclamation by the National Bureau of Economic Research of a recovery based on the rigged official numbers.

A government can always produce the illusion of economic growth by underestimating the rate of inflation. There is no question that a substitution-based measure of inflation understates the inflation that people experience. More proof that there has been no economic recovery is available from those data series that are unaffected by inflation. If the economy were in fact recovering, these date series would be picking up. Instead, they are flat or declining, as John Williams demonstrates.

For example, according to the government’s own data, payroll employment in December 2011 is less than in 2001. Meanwhile, there has been a decade of population growth. The presstitute media calls the alleged economic recovery a “jobless recovery,” which is a contradiction in terms. There can be no recovery without a growth in employment and consumer income.

Real average weekly earnings (deflated by the government’s CPI-W) have never recovered their 1973 peak. Real median household income (deflated by the government’s CPI-U) has not recovered its 2001 peak and is below the 1969 level. If earnings were deflated by the original methodology instead of by the new substitution-based methodology, the picture would be bleaker.

Consumer confidence shows no recovery and is far below the level of a decade ago.
How does an economy recover without a recovery in consumer confidence?

Housing starts have remained flat since 2009 and are below their previous peak.

Retail sales are below the index level of January 2000.

Industrial production remains below the index level of January 2000.

To repeat, the only indicator of economic recovery is the GDP deflated with an understated measure of inflation.

The US economy cannot recover, because the US economy depends on consumer expenditures for more than 70% of its activity. The offshoring of middle class jobs has stopped the rise in middle class income and caused a drop in consumer spending power.

The Federal Reserve under Alan Greenspan compensated for the absence of US consumer income growth with a policy of easy credit and a policy of driving up home prices with low interest rates. This policy allowed people to refinance their homes and to spend the inflated equity in their homes that Greenspan’s policy created.

In other words, an increase in consumer indebtedness and dissavings drove the economy in the place of the missing growth in consumer incomes.

Today, consumers are too indebted to borrow, and banks are too insolvent to lend. Therefore, there is no possibility of further debt expansion as a substitute for real income growth. An offshored economy is a dead and exhausted economy.

The consequences of a dead economy when the government is wasting trillions of dollars in wars of naked aggression and in bailouts of fraudulent financial institutions is a government budget that can only be financed by printing money.

The consequence of printing money when jobs have been moved offshore is an inflationary depression. This catastrophe could begin to unfold this year or in 2013. If Europe’s problems worsen, flight into dollars could delay sharp rises in US inflation until 2014.

The emperor has no clothes, and sooner or later this will be recognized.
