Mother Nature was apparently determined to see out 2014 with a bang, ramping up the extreme weather and Earth Changes in December. Snowstorms buried cities in Russia's Far east and Northeastern China, where a waterfall on the Yellow River partially froze. Japan was hit with record-breaking snowfall for the second time in a year, while a deep freeze in Northern India claimed at least 150 lives.
A week of non-stop electrical storms brought hail, flooding and widespread damage to Sydney, Australia, while a huge sinkhole swallowed three cars in Melbourne. Fish and whales continue to turn up dead in large numbers on coastlines and in freshwater lakes and rivers, thanks in part to increased volcanic activity, demonstrated above ground in December via eruptions in Indonesia, Mexico, Iceland, Cape Verde, Hawaii and Japan.
Drought-stricken Sao Paulo was inundated with rain, turning streets into rivers. Waterspouts appeared in Australia and the Mediterranean, a tornado hit downtown LA for the first time in decades, while another 'unseasonal' tornado outbreak in the U.S. South killed 5 and left dozens homeless. The "worst flooding in decades" hit Southeast Asia, especially Malaysia and Sri Lanka, where some quarter million people had to evacuate their homes.
A trail of storms pummelled the US West Coast, with landslides, mudslides, blizzards, and flash-flooding washing away homes and roads. Across the Atlantic, a so-called 'weather bomb' hit the UK and Ireland, bringing monster waves and hurricane-force winds. This was followed by a big freeze that brought blizzards to Western Europe, the Balkans and the Mediterranean, where Malta received its first snow in over a half-century.
Spectacular meteor fireballs were filmed over Puerto Rico, Brazil, the US, Canada, Spain, and Japan. So-called 'mystery' booms shook homes in communities from the US to the UK. An incredible UFO sighting in Santiago, Chile, and the appearance of a bright glowing 'plasma light' over Lima, Peru rang in the New Year.
Buckle up for 2015; it's gonna be 'interesting'!

In March 2014, hydraulic fracturing – or fracking – caused 77 earthquakes in a small Ohio town that had no previous experience with seismic activity, according to a new study. One quake was large enough to be felt in neighboring areas.
Fracking in Poland Township, Ohio was halted two days after the area was hit with a magnitude-3 earthquake along a hidden fault in rock which was deep beneath a natural gas well in the Utica Shale, according to research published in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America.
The study's authors said the magnitude-3 quake was "one the largest earthquakes ever induced by hydraulic fracturing in the United States."
All 77 quakes occurred between March 4-12, the study found.
Besides the magnitude-3 quake, the study reported that most of the seismic activity was not felt by Poland Township's population, which numbered 14,960 in the 2010 census.
No previous seismic activity had occurred in Poland Township, which sits near the Pennsylvania border, and the quakes stopped once fracking operations were put on hold, according to lead study author Robert Skoumal, a graduate student in seismology at Miami University in Ohio.
To unleash oil or natural gas, fracking requires blasting large volumes of highly pressurized water, sand, and other chemicals into layers of rock. The contents of fracking fluid include chemicals that the energy industry and many government officials will not name, yet they insist the chemicals do not endanger human health, contradicting findings by scientists and environmentalists. Once used, toxic fracking wastewater is then either stored in deep underground wells, disposed of in open pits for evaporation, sprayed into waste fields or used over again.
Fracking has been linked to groundwater contamination, an uptick in earthquakes in other states, exacerbation of drought conditions and a host of health concerns for humans and the local environment.
Ohio and many other US states, including Oklahoma and Texas, have been subject to intense amounts of fracking in recent years, as the effects of the process have caused controversy from coast to coast.
For instance, a separate study released in October found that fracking had a direct connection to some 400 micro-earthquakes in the eastern Ohio town of Canton.
Last month, New York became the first US state to ban fracking.
“I cannot support high volume hydraulic fracturing in the great state of New York,” said Howard Zucker, acting New York State Health Commissioner. He equated fracking to second-hand smoke, the health risks of which were not fully understood until many years of scientific studies were conducted.
A fracking ban was recently instituted in Denton, Texas, a town of 123,000 located on top of the natural gas goldmine that is the Barnett Shale formation, the birthplace of the much-maligned oil and gas extraction method.
Meanwhile, dozens of other US cities, towns, villages, and counties have passed measures against the practice, according to Food and Water Watch.
In November, cities in Ohio voted on fracking ban measures, with mixed results. The cities of Gates Mills, Kent, and Youngstown – all located in northeast Ohio, near Poland Township – voted down bans, while the town of Athens approved one.
Yet city bans are not always sure to remain in place, as local ordinances against fracking can run afoul of state laws that allow the process, as is the case in Ohio.
In Colorado, for instance, state officials have worked to supersede local, voter-approved bans through the legal system.

Ancient Amulet Discovered with Curious Palindrome Inscription

An ancient, two-sided amulet uncovered in Cyprus contains a 59-letter inscription that reads the same backwards as it does forwards.
Archaeologists discovered the amulet, which is roughly 1,500 years old, at the ancient city of Nea Paphos in southwest Cyprus.

The three letters at the very bottom, ΕΑΙ, were squeezed in and are hard to read. The amulet is about 1.4 inches by 1.6 inches (34.9 millimeters by 41.2 millimeters) in size. On the other side of the amulet is an inscription, written in Greek, that reads the same backwards as it does forwards, making it a palindrome. It reads:

This translates to "Iahweh (a god) is the bearer of the secret name, the lion of Re secure in his shrine."
Researchers have found similar palindromes elsewhere in the ancient world writes Joachim Śliwa, a professor at the Institute of Archaeology at Jagiellonian University in Kraków, Poland, in an article recently published in the journal Studies in Ancient Art and Civilization.
Śliwa notes that the scribe made two small mistakes when writing this palindrome, in two instances writing a "ρ" instead of "v."
The amulet was discovered in the summer of 2011 by archaeologists with the Paphos Agora Project. Led by Jagiellonian University professor Ewdoksia Papuci-Wladyka, this team is excavating an ancient agora at Nea Paphos, and uncovered this amulet during their work. Agoras served as gathering places in the ancient world.
Amulets like the one found at Nea Paphos were made to protect their owners from danger and harm, Papuci-Wladyka told Live Science in an email.
Christians and pagans
During the 5th and 6th centuries, Cyprus was part of the Eastern Roman Empire. The Roman Empire had split in two during the 4th century, with Cyprus falling under control of the east. When the Western Roman Empire fell during the 5th century, the Eastern Roman Empire continued to flourish and became what is sometimes called the Byzantine Empire.

This amulet adds to evidence that people practiced traditional, polytheistic beliefs on Cyprus for an extended time, Papuci-Wladyka said. She notes that a structure called the Villa of Theseus has a mosaic with pagan elements that was likely repaired as late as the 7th century A.D.
It "rather seems that Christian and pagan religions coexisted in Paphos in times of [the] amulet being in use," Papuci-Wladyka told Live Science in an email.
Strange iconography
Despite that coexistence, the amulet has several unusual features that suggest its creator didn't fully understand the mythological characters depicted.
"It must be stated that the depiction is fairly unskilled and schematic. It is iconographically based on Egyptian sources, but these sources were not fully understood by the creator of the amulet," Śliwa wrote in the journal article.
For instance, rather than sitting on a stool, Harpocrates should be sitting on a lotus flower, with legs drawn up, Śliwa said. Additionally, the dog-headed cynocephalus should not be mimicking Harpocrates. In "the classic version, the cynocephalus faces Harpocrates with paws raised in adoration," Śliwa wrote."We can find no justification for the cynocephalus's gesture of raising its right paw to its lips in a manner similar to Harpocrates."
Even stranger is the fact that Harpocrates and the cynocephalus have crisscrossing lines on their bodies, which suggest the ancient artist thought these figures should be mummified along with Osiris. While the cynocephalus can be shown with mummy bandages, Harpocrates is not supposed to have them. Mummy bandages have "no justification in the case of Harpocrates," Śliwa wrote.

NASA detects enormous 'coronal hole' on Sun’s South Pole (PHOTO)

A giant dark hole has appeared on the sun’s flaming surface, a recently-taken NASA picture has revealed. So far, scientists are stumped by why this spectacular phenomenon, known as a “coronal hole,” occurs.
“The Sun starts 2015 with an enormous coronal hole near the South Pole,” scientists of NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory wrote in their blog, having posted a picture of the flaming sun with a gaping dark space in its lower part.

What modern science knows is that “coronal holes” are places where particles leave the sun’s surface at huge speeds - of up to 500 miles per hour (800 kilometers per hour). What’s still unclear is why this is happening.
The sun’s glowing comes from the “trapped” particles. The coronal holes “contain little solar material, have lower temperatures, and therefore, appear much darker.”
The first pictures of the phenomenon were taken by NASA astronauts in the early 1970s.

Organic farming can feed the world if done right, scientists claim

Organic farming is much more productive than previously thought, according to a new analysis of agricultural studies that challenges the conventional “biased” view that pesticide-free agriculture cannot feed the world.
The study says that organic yields were only 19.2 per cent lower, on average, than those from conventional crops and that this gap could be reduced to just eight per cent if the pesticide-free crops were rotated more frequently.
Furthermore, in some crops - especially leguminous plants such as beans, peas and lentils - there were no significant differences in yields, the researchers from the University of California, Berkeley found.
“In terms of comparing productivity among the two techniques, this paper sets the record straight on the comparison between organic and conventional agriculture,” said Claire Kremen, professor of environmental science, policy and management at Berkeley.
The study comes amid rising concerns that intense farming practices are damaging the environment, with the widespread use of nerve agent pesticides frequently blamed for declining populations of bees and other pollinators. Meanwhile, fertilisers are producing smaller and smaller increases in yields because they are now so effective they are difficult to improve upon.
“With global food needs predicted to greatly increase in the next 50 years, it’s critical to look more closely at organic farming because, aside from the environmental impacts of industrial agriculture, the ability of synthetic fertilizers to increase crop yields has been declining,” said Prof Kremen.
The researchers based their findings on a meta-analysis of 115 studies – a dataset three times greater than any previous such paper – comparing organic and conventional agriculture.
In addition to finding a smaller – 19.2 per cent – productivity difference between the two than previously calculated, the researchers also found that optimising organic productivity through different techniques could further reduce the gap.
Multi-cropping, or growing several crops together on the same field, would cut the yield difference to nine per cent, with crop rotation reducing the gap to eight per cent.
The study, published in the journal Royal Society B, suggested that the gaps could be even smaller than they have calculated because existing studies were “often biased in favour of conventional agriculture”.
“Our study suggests that through appropriate investment in agroecological research to improve organic management and in breeding cultivars for organic farming systems, the yield gap could be reduced or even eliminated for some crops or regions,” said the study’s lead author, Lauren Ponisio, a graduate student in environmental science, policy and management.
The researchers suggest that organic farming can be a very competitive alternative to industrial agriculture when it comes to food production.
“It’s important to remember that our current agricultural system produces far more food than is needed to provide for everyone on the planet,” said Prof Kremen.
“Eradicating world hunger requires increasing the access to food, not simply the production. Also, increasing the proportion of agriculture that uses sustainable, organic methods of farming is not a choice, it’s a necessity. We simply can’t continue to produce food far into the future without taking care of our soils, water and biodiversity,” she added.
Snow squalls cause massive car pileup in New Hampshire

At least 35 cars got into a massive pileup in New Hampshire on Friday due to a fast-moving morning storm that induced snow squalls and icy slick.
The crash at Interstate 93 took place in Ashland at around 10 AM local time, the New Hampshire Department of Transportation said. According to some reports, up to 100 cars could be part of the massive crash.
The pileup happened in the northbound lanes, which were closed to traffic by the road police.
"We had a snow squall go through around 9:45 a.m. ET this morning, which typically will reduce visibility," said State Police Lieutenant Jerome Maslan.
The police said that were reports of multiple injuries, without specifying their numbers and character. At this point, no fatalities have been reported in the chain reaction crash.
It’s not the first time Interstate 93 is being paralyzed by a snow related crash as five people were injured in a 20-vehicle pileup in 2012.
Back in 2009, a 59-vehicle crash led to a dozen people being hurt.

How a Low-Tech Seed Bank in Greece Preserves Thousands of Heritage Crops

Members of the Greek seed bank Peliti say that keeping their wares in production—instead of in refrigerators—improves the health of the plants they’re working to save.
Ethical consumers in the United States are increasingly concerned with the seeds used in the production of their food. However, this has been an issue in Europe for many years. In fact, there are several transnational seed-saver networks, like Arche Noah, whose members have become experts on heritage seeds.
One of the most famous groups within Arche Noah’s 8,000-member network is the “live” seed bank Peliti,
which has been raising awareness about endangered varieties of heritage
seeds since 1995. Once tiny, now Peliti is an NGO that receives thousands of visitors for its annual seed swap
where you can get a mind-boggling number of seed varieties for free.
It’s the biggest event of its kind in the world with an estimated 5,000
visitors from about 50 different countries in 2013. Recently I had the
opportunity to interview one of the 200 Peliti volunteers, who are
spread throughout Greece and beyond.
They call themselves a “live seed bank” because traditional
seed banks store seeds under refrigeration, sometimes for up 15 years,
which is “more like a seed museum than a seed bank,” according to
volunteer Vasso Kanellopoulou. Peliti concentrates on keeping their
seeds reproducing and germinating so they don’t fall victim to genetic erosion. Originally they started out with only a few hundred varieties, now they have thousands they’re saving from extinction.
Autonomous seed networks
Peliti isn’t just a community. It is yet another node within the larger global seed-saver network. They are now morphing into a decentralized network themselves. Their organization has given birth to many satellite communities that are linked with one another via a Google Group.
These satellite communities, one of which is in Athens, organize local seed swaps for those unable to travel to Peliti. The local seed swaps emerged from a growing interest by urban farmers in Greece who wanted more heritage seeds after the financial crisis. Peliti is encouraging growth of urban agriculture throughout their network.
Their organization goes even further, with a consortium of seed savers being represented in the European Union by a team of lawyers. They’ve also helped stop a law against heritage seeds in the E.U. parliament. Ironically, it was the Greek government that proposed the legislation that had seed savers all over Europe worried. Thankfully the E.U. parliament has rewritten the legislation after hearing the complaints.
Recently, Peliti launched International Seed Days, a series of meetings attended by delegations from more than 18 countries. The meetings are closed to the public and take place two days before the seed swap. The renowned activist Vandana Shiva spoke at International Seed Days last year.
Panagiotis Sainatoudis, Peliti’s founder, says that one of the organization’s basic principles is “to support man’s freedom to keep his own seed so he won’t depend every year on seed purchase, commerce, not even on the seeds supplied by Peliti.” When you get connected to the Peliti network, you automatically gain some autonomy.
Here's a personal example: In 2011 I was cycling through Greece and discovered a Peliti participant, Vasilios, on his farm outside Thessaloniki. Vasilios and I remained in contact so when I got back to London he mailed me some seeds for varieties of lettuce and Swiss chard that grow well in cold climates. I planted the seeds and, as the rule goes, I let a certain amount go to seed after the harvest.
Now every year I have Peliti seeds to plant; I just have to be careful to instruct my housemates not to “weed the seeds,” which happened one year when a journalist roommate who fancied himself a gardener threw away all my Peliti seeds! Good thing I had a reserve. You never know where your Peliti seeds will wind up; I share extras when I have them.
There is a state organization in Greece dedicated to preserving the biodiversity of Greece. However, its future remains uncertain because of the financial crisis. It is said that the National Seed Bank has around 15,000 varieties (a small percentage of the total genetic heritage of Greece). However, 5,000 of these have been lost due to funding cuts. Losing money is one thing, but losing species is dangerous!
Perhaps Greece’s most important national bank could be its agricultural gene bank. After Spain, Greece is the country with the richest biodiversity in Europe, and Peliti aims to keep it that way as their seed collection will soon surpass that of the National Seed Bank. It’s a case of community stewardship supplanting the duties of the state.

5 Trends You Will See Intensify in 2015

We are creatures of habit and when things go wrong we play the blame game, whether it be directed to ourselves or others. The coming year will be shaped by an increased sense of personal responsibility and rising numbers of people divided on critical issues related to our food supply, our water, our medicine, our health and the planet itself.
All nations on Earth are now living in the times of change and accelerated chaos. Nothing is the same any more. The past few years alone have been a thorn in the side of Mr and Mrs. Consistency. In fact, the only thing that has been consistent is change. As each year passes, we see a greater contrast in shorter period of time.
Those who want change are putting their neck out and standing up for what they believe in. Others are satisfied with following the blind. Some claim the difference is being awakened while others suggest it's just our time for a major shift to shake what we believe to be normal.
The greatest divisions to separate our species are unfolding at this very moment and the trends that have defined the landscapes of societal values, political will and moral education are being challenged at unprecedented levels. Here are 5 trends that will intensify next year.
1) People Eating For Health Rather Than Fads
More people will begin eating for their health and not necessarily choosing a dietary strategy based on a moral decision. That means diet fads will eventually become obsolete as people become ultra informed on making decisions that best suit their metabolic type. The future of nutrition will be based on eating to "fuel" our body's cells and our engines of metabolism. As more people migrate to the foods that align with their own body, rather than a perceived ideal of what we "should" eat, we will see a growing contingency of healthy eaters who select foods based on the best possible choices for individualized nutrition. This means there will be two types of people moving forward: those who cannot move past their own ideology; and those that will. For those that will, it will mean a lesser extent of arguments, debates and anger directed towards specific dietary choices, regardless of whether somebody chooses vegan, raw, vegetarian, paleo, Mediterranean, junk food, etc. It won't matter as much as it used to. More people will be concerned about the purity of our food and water supply, the banning of GMOs, agricultural practices and so many other issues that will bind groups together towards a common goal. For those who cannot move past their dietary ideologies and accept those of others, they will detach from this growing contingency and unfortunately be left in the minority.
2) People Standing Against Toxins In Our Food
Growing numbers are also now uniformly rejecting toxic additives in our food supply. As the evidence continues to mount against artificial flavors/colors, enriched wheat, hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, canola oil, aspartame and the abundance of other harmful preservatives, emulsifiers and artificial sweeteners, the public perception of food production is changing. We are on the precipice of discovering what our toxic food industry has done to our bodies and our environment. What used to be acceptable is no longer acceptable and people are speaking up. There is a heightened awareness and a sense of caution on the minds of most grocery shoppers. The length of time spent reading ingredient labels in between aisles has increased exponentially in the last decade. There will be growing interest in whole foods, fermented foods, non-gmo verification, superfoods, clean and affordable filtered water, sustainable food supplies among many other trends.
3) People Standing Against Toxins In Our Water Supply
The next two years will see more communities remove dangerous chemicals such as fluoride from their water supplies. Since 2010, 168 communities have rejected fluoride and those numbers will only continue to grow. More Americans will become informed on the fact that fluoride is one of the few openly admitted toxins by the US government, known to be harmful to our health, yet absolutely no action is being taken to restrict its use on a federal level. The evidence that fluoridation is more harmful than beneficial is now overwhelming and policy makers who avoid thoroughly reviewing recent data and banning the toxin will risk a huge backlash from the public as supporters for non-fluoridated communities rise.
4) People Standing Against Toxins In Medicine
Perhaps the most evident in this area will be among vaccines. There are simply no safe vaccines and there is no possibility at this time of making vaccines safer because manufacturers are unwilling to remove the toxins they claim are necessary within vaccine formulations. People are now listening more than ever and the message is spreading like wild fire. The evidence being highlighted is that the historical significance and effectiveness of vaccines is nothing more than repeated myths absent of any real-life data. Unless you don't have an opinion at all on vaccines, you likely fall into one of the five phases of awareness and awakening and the coming year will shift more people from being on the fence, to coming to terms with all the risks that outweigh the benefits. There are now millions of educated and informed groups of people that will stop at nothing to expose the dangers of vaccinations. Their numbers are growing by the day and as government and medical officials hold on to the vaccination fairy tale that it does no harm, the separation between those who continue to propagate this myth and those against it will only intensify in 2015. Among health care, there is also mass interest in alternative and complementary health methods which is now a multi billion dollar industry, especially as the skepticism of medical patients increases regarding conventional medicine, their methods and symptomatic short-term thinking which many believe has caused western nations great disservice regarding human health.
5) Personal Responsibility For Our Health
We can no longer hide from the disease epidemics nor face the consequences of sustaining a chronically ill population with ever-increasing health care costs. Fear has driven millions of people to submit to medical practitioners who can only provide symptomatic relief and inevitably prolong illness. This is changing and as we begin to honor the many great Physicians for their good will, we will also see the limitations of medical practice and its ability to heal.
We will soon stop blaming others for our personal failures regarding our state of health. We will begin taking a greater sense of responsibility in what we eat and how we move our bodies. We will pursue physical activity to a greater extent this year for enjoyment and health rather than fitness or weight loss. Constant, consistent physical movement throughout our daily lives is the single most important thing we can do to be physically healthier and smarter, regardless of age. It's time for an new era in movement. Movement towards physical and mental health. As we align with physical activities that allow us to express our movement patterns, more people will benefit from increased cardiovascular and muscular health. Nutrition as well as our choice of health practitioners will also take on new experimentation in 2015 as we become more comfortable with giving our bodies personalized nutrients and care at the highest levels with experts that can provide guidance on how we can heal ourselves.
