The IPCC Exposed

The IPCC Exposed
Sept 27, 2013 | corbettreport

SHOW NOTES AND MP3: http://www.corbettreport.com/?p=8066

The IPCC has released its latest assessment of the state of climate science, and this time it's even more dire than their 2007 assessment. Global warming is "unequivocal" and humans are the "dominant cause" to a certainty of 95%. But how are these uncertainties calculated? And how does the IPCC process work anyway? Join us this week on The Corbett Report as we dissect the latest IPCC hype and examine the organizations processes and conclusions.

Industry Waste: ‘Zombie’ Endocrine Disruptors Dumped in Water Supply

‘Zombie’ Endocrine Disruptors Dumped in Water Supply
Sept 27, 2013 | TruthStream Media | Aaron Dykes

Hormone-upsetting chemicals dumped into the environment are rising up to haunt Americans, spreading cancer and infertility around the world.

With the endocrine disrupting Bisphenol-A (BPA) – found ubiquitously in food can linings, plastic bottles, ATM receipts, toilet paper and hundreds of other products – already a major problem tied to infertility, breast cancer, low sperm counts, deformities in humans and sex morphology in aquatic wildlife, yet still unregulated by the FDA, other hormonal disruptors dumped into water supplies are emerging as major issues, too.

Watch the video:

Night of the Living BPA? ‘Zombie’ Hormone Disruptors Come Alive at Night

Now, environmentalists are concerned that hormones dumped into water – from sources like factory farm cattle operations – are at higher levels than previously thought, in part because they mysteriously regenerate at night, thwarting attempts to measure them based on assumptions about them breaking down in sunlight. From Nature.com:
“Hormone-disrupting chemicals may be far more prevalent in lakes and rivers than previously thought. Environmental scientists have discovered that although these compounds are often broken down by sunlight, they can regenerate at night, returning to life like zombies.

Risk assessments have been built on the basis that light exposure is enough to break down these products,” adds Laura Vandenberg, an endocrinologist at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst who was not involved in the study. “This work undermines that idea completely.” [emphasis added]
The Nature.com article focused on a study conducted by the University of Iowa on the use of the synthetic anabolic steroid trenbolone acetate, which frequently runs off into water supplies after some 20 million cattle across the United States convert it into the potent endocrine disruptor” 17α-trenbolone (its use, like BPA, is banned in the EU).

The going assumption from both industrialists and environmental regulators was that these chemicals were breaking down during the day as they were exposed to sunlight, rendering the effects on aquatic life, and human and animal use of the water, negligible.

However, scientists found that 17α-trenbolone “levels rebounded during the dark periods,” with variations in temperature and pH often accelerating that process. Since environmental monitors were primarily taking samples during the day, they were not recording data showing the “zombie” culturing of these – and potentially many other – endocrine disruptors.

Endocrine-Disrupting Herbicide Linked with Cancer & Birth Defects in 52 Million Americans’ Drinking Water

Meanwhile, more than 250 groups have banded together to demand that the EPA step up to the plate to ban atrazine, a toxic pesticide used primarily as a leading herbicide, that leaches into the environment and runs off into water supplies across the United States. It, too, has been linked with endocrine and hormonal disruption, and likely has widespread environmental effects.

Like BPA and trenbolone acetate, atrazine – sold by the biotech giant Syngenta – is already banned in European countries, but remains virtually unregulated in America.

According to EcoWatch:
“Up to 80 million pounds of it are used in the U.S. each year, contaminating ground, surface and drinking water. Atrazine, or its primary degradate, was found in approximately 75 percent of stream water and about 40 percent of all groundwater samples from agricultural areas tested in an extensive U.S. Geological Survey study.”

“In people, atrazine exposure may be linked to increased risks of thyroid cancer, reproductive harm and birth defects. For example, a recent study showed that children of mothers exposed to Atrazine had an increased risk of a birth defect called choanal atresia, a narrowing or blockage of the back of the nasal canal that can be life-threatening in newborn infants.”
The hormone disrupting pesticide has been found in the drinking water of at least 52 million Americans. I previously reported on a little-noticed item in the Wall Street Journal in 2012, quietly announcing that the biotech firm Syngenta had settled a class action lawsuit with more than 2,000 water districts in the American Midwest over the contamination of its drinking water supplies.

The terms of the settlement were not fully disclosed, and Syngenta admitted no liability, maintaining that atrazine is “safe,” and stating that, “No one ever has or ever could be exposed to enough atrazine in water to affect their health.”

Sycophants on Campus: College Protests of Absence of War Led by Professors

"PROFITS"
College Protests of Absence of War Led by Professors
Sept 27, 2013 | Washington's Blog

Come gather round people wherever you roam.  And admit that the bullshit around you has grown.

Students used to get out of tests and assignments by explaining to sympathetic professors that they had been busy protesting the war on Vietnam.  The times they are a changin.

Today college professors lead teach-ins to protest the absence of an all-out U.S. war on Syria.  Back then, the public and the government trailed behind the activists.  Now the public has grown enlightened, and in a significant but limited way won over the government, blocking the missile strikes, but it’s not just the U.S. President who looks mad enough to spit over the casus belli interruptus.  Professors are pissed.

The University of Virginia’s law school has another law school next door belonging to the U.S. Army.  The University has built a research “park” next door to the Army’s “Ground Intelligence Center.”  State funds are drying up, and the Pentagon’s tap has been left all the way open.  This Central Virginian military industrial academic complex is where Washington finally had to turn to find anyone willing to pretend the famous aluminum tubes in Iraq might be for scary, scary nukes. In defense of that record, this week is Iraq War Beautification Week at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center, always a gung-ho proponent of militarism.

Much of this is expected and typical of U.S. academia these days.  But the promotions of attacks on Syria have become slicker and more insidious.  Here’s an announcement of an event held on Thursday:
Teach-In on Syria & Fundraiser for Refugees
Thursday, Sept 26, 6:00pm – 7:00pm
University of Virginia: Nau 101
Moderator: Joshua M. White, History
Panelists: Ahmed H. al-Rahim, Religious Studies, “Islamist Ideologies in Syria”
Hanadi al-Samman, MESALC, “The Syrian Revolution and the Plight of Refugees Today”
Jonah Schulhofer-Wohl, Politics, “Civil War in Syria”
Elizabeth Thompson, History, “Religion and War since 1913″
David Waldner, Politics, “Syria, Before: Dictatorship and the Growth of Public Opposition to the Regime”
And a film presentation on the refugee experience
Co-sponsored by the Arab Student Organization
This announcement doesn’t advertise a pro-war event aimed at promoting the deaths of large numbers of people.  Peace groups sent around this announcement.  I sent it around.  I attended.  And here’s what happened:

Thompson spoke well about World War I and sat silently as her colleagues promoted a new war as barbaric as what she described from a hundred years earlier.

Waldner described the early, non-violent Arab Spring in Syria, breaking into tears, and then sat silently as his colleagues pushed for greater violence, using his stories of early nonviolence to justify it.  (Somehow the opposite never happens: we never have to justify nonviolent activism on the grounds that its participants once killed a lot of people.)

The other panelists demanded more weapons for Syrian rebels, more U.S. military involvement, more war, and the violent overthrow of the government.

Students sat there silently.  Professors in the audience who say they oppose war sat there silently and told each other afterwards that their complaints about what just happened should remain confidential.  It wouldn’t be polite to speak up.

I spoke up at the event.  I questioned the panelists’ fantasies about the glory of violence, their willingness to see many more people die in order to overthrow a government that would not thereby be replaced with something better.

Schulhofer-Wohl said that U.S. weapons would overwhelm the government of Syria and its Russian backers.  I pointed out that the Russians have more weapons too, but this professor clearly thinks this is another Cold War and that this time Russia will give in easily and cheaply, there will be no blowback, and the pawns in the game will all benefit.

Or, rather, the evil of one side of the war justifies the other side, and the consequences be damned.

Students sat there silently.

We can laugh at academia marginalizing itself.  We can celebrate the greater wisdom of the masses.  But these professors, speaking in a building where a former CIA “historian” now works, are having their way.  The CIA is arming the war in Syria and escalating it, against the will of the U.S. public.  Students are being subtly indoctrinated with acceptance of war and with contempt for democracy at one stroke.

UVA founder Thomas Jefferson would be outraged, unless someone told the old slavery profiteer how much money wars make for a certain little group of special people.  Then he’d understand perfectly.  When UVA’s Dean of Arts and Sciences was promoting war on Libya, she held up Jefferson’s own war on Libya as a model.

This is our heritage, boys and girls.  And its days are numbered.  People are not going to stand for it much longer.  Academia is going to have to accept it that soon they’ll be drenched to the bone.

Some of those silent sitting students have brains in their heads.  Their professors forget that sometimes.

The Global Situation Has Taken a Turn For the Worse: Recovery Unlikely

The Global Situation Has Taken a Turn For the Worse: Recovery Unlikely
Sept 28, 2013 | Sott.net | Laura Knight-Jadczyk

As I glance through the headlines today, I feel a rock sinking to the pit of my stomach with the realization that the pathological minority ruling our world are truly taking all of us over the cliff. I am reminded of something Andrew Lobaczewski wrote in his seminal work, Political Ponerology:
"Germs are not aware that they will be burned alive or buried deep in the ground along with the human body whose death they are causing."
Applied to the topic of this essay, the saying is not just a metaphor; it is deeply and frighteningly accurate. Imagine a world that believes in global warming that is hit by the sudden onset of an ice-age. Studies reveal that ice ages are probably preceded by periods of freak weather patterns (check) hot spots and cold spots (check) torrential, localized rains and flooding (check) increased comet dust in the atmosphere (check), increased volcanism (check) a series of particularly cold and harsh winters (check) interspersed with localized heatwaves and drought (check); and then, finally, the watershed winter comes when the increased heating from within the planet itself (evidenced by the increasing volcanism) and its concomitant increased evaporation of the seas, combines with the cooled and lowered upper atmosphere, and the snow begins to fall and fall... and fall... and fall. Convert the extraordinary rains that have fallen in parts of the upper northern hemisphere in the past few years to snow volumes, and you can easily see that entire regions could be quickly buried under many meters of snow that, assuming that the albedo effect does not rapidly take over and prevent the snow from melting, by the time it did melt, multiplied millions of living things - including people - would have perished, buried along with the pathological leaders they have erroneously believed had their best interests at heart.

Assuming that the home countries of the leading scientists issuing the most recent scientific fraud, the new IPCC Report on Climate Change, are not among those buried in the ice of the rapidly descending ice-age, what do you think is going to happen to them in the areas that do not get buried under a kilometer or two of ice? I don't know about you, but it's not a pretty picture to contemplate. These idiots are not only playing with the lives of the entire population of this planet, they are gambling with their own, and they don't even have a pair in their hand.

Climate expert warns of impending global cooling crisis

SOTT: Climate expert warns of impending global cooling crisis
Sept 26, 2013 | Washington Free Beacon

A prominent climate scientist says the earth actually faces a global cooling crisis on the eve of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change's (IPCC) release of its latest climate change report.

David Archibald, an Australian scientist and visiting fellow at the The Institute of World Politics (IWP) in Washington, D.C., said during an IWP presentation Wednesday that contrary to a perceived consensus among the scientific community, the planet's climate is not warming. Global temperatures have essentially remained flat in the last thirty years, he said.

While temperatures have increased by a modest 0.8 degrees Celsius in the last 150 years, that rise is unremarkable compared to previous increases in earth's history, he said. Temperature spikes have occurred for hundreds of thousands of years and were slightly higher in the Roman Empire and Medieval periods, he added, according to a Swedish study and data from ice cores in Vostok, Antarctica.

Additionally, about 80 percent of the warming that has occurred can be attributed to water vapor compared to about 10 percent for carbon dioxide, said Archibald. The IPCC's report, scheduled for release Friday, is expected to state with 95 percent certainty that greenhouse-gas emissions generated by humans are responsible for 20th century warming.

"The IPCC models have failed," Archibald said, adding that meetings like the 2009 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen, Denmark are "hilarious."

Archibald, credited as the first scientist to develop a method for using solar sunspot cycles to predict temperatures, instead said solar activity suggests global temperatures will cancel out previous warming and fall 2 to 3 degrees Celsius by 2040.

That could wreak havoc on the world's food supply by potentially reducing global grain production by 400 million tonnes - mirroring the skyrocketing crop costs and 200,000 European deaths sparked by the 1816 eruption of Mt. Tambora in Indonesia.

"There will be at least one consolation. Phil Jones, Michael Mann, James Hansen and Al Gore will all, most likely, still be around to see their entire religious belief system collapsing around their ears," wrote James Delingpole, a writer for the Telegraph, in a post last year on Archibald's work.

UN: ‘The World Won’t Cool Without Chemtrails’ (No Matter What)

UN: ‘The World Won’t Cool Without Chemtrails’ (No Matter What)
Sept 26, 2013 | TruthStream Media | Melissa Melton

(Melissa Melton via The Daily Sheeple)

According to the upcoming United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change climate assessment, “Global warming is irreversible without massive geoengineering of the atmosphere’s chemistry.
The New Scientist reported yesterday:
“According to one of its lead authors, and the latest draft seen by New Scientist, the report will say: ‘CO2-induced warming is projected to remain approximately constant for many centuries following a complete cessation of emission. A large fraction of climate change is thus irreversible on a human timescale, except if net anthropogenic CO2 emissions were strongly negative over a sustained period.’

In other words, even if all the world ran on carbon-free energy and deforestation ceased, the only way of lowering temperatures would be to devise a scheme for sucking hundreds of billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.
So all this time we have been told we have to change human behavior to fix climate change, but now we are being told they have to geoengineer the planet no matter what. (Might as well go buy that Hummer you’ve had your eye on and eat a few more steaks while you’re at it, because apparently it won’t matter either way.)

In the excerpt above, The New Scientist links to another of its articles from just a couple of days ago, “Can geoengineering avert climate chaos?” which begins with, “OOPS. We really didn’t mean to, but we seem to have broken the planet. Is there anything we can do to make it better?”

The United Nations’ short answer? “Geoengineering (and only geoengineering).”

Nevermind none of these governments or international bodies ever like to bring up Climategate, where major research players at the Climate Research Unit were embroiled in scandal when leaked emails showed they were purposefully skewing climate data to hide the fact that the earth’s temps were actually in decline.
In fact, just days ago, the Associated Press reported a mini Climategate II, ahead of the UN report above:
“Scientists working on a landmark U.N. report on climate change are struggling to explain why global warming appears to have slowed down in the past 15 years even though greenhouse gas emissions keep rising.

Leaked documents obtained by The Associated Press show there are deep concerns among governments over how to address the issue ahead of next week’s meeting of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.” (via Fox News)
The number one geoengineering answer appears to come in the form of ‘chemtrails,’ a phenomenon of spraying heavy metals like aluminum into the atmosphere to block out the sun. Although governments still refuse to officially admit chemtrailing even exists, articles such as, “Geoengineering Could Turn Skies White” published last summer blatantly discuss a Carnegie Institute study on geoengineering via chemtrails as if it is already occurring as we speak:
The white haze that hangs over many major cities could become a familiar sight everywhere if the world decides to try geoengineering to create a cooler planet.” [emphasis added]
Many have noticed what at first appear to be jet contrails sprayed across the sky, but instead of readily fading away behind the jets as contrails typically do, these trails fan out, hang in the air and sink into a murk on the horizon. While anyone referring to the chemtrail phenomenon is quickly labeled a conspiracy theorist, scientists and climate change advocates have been openly calling for the spraying of aerosols into the atmosphere to advert supposed climate crises for some time now.

Billionaire Bill Gates has also pumped millions into an aerosol geoengineering project in conjunction with Harvard set to begin this year. The Department of Energy’s Climate Research Facility ARM has a list of ongoing aerosol projects here.

ARM works in conjunction with Argonne Laboratories, Los Alamos National Laboratories and Oak Ridge National Laboratories among others, names that should be familiar to anyone who has researched the Manhattan Project our government engaged in to covertly build the first atomic bomb during World War II.

For those people who would argue that our government would never engage in a heavily compartmentalized top secret project taking place simultaneously all across the country spanning multiple years, the victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombs beg to differ.

In the meantime, climate change advocates (who also happen to be major investors) like former Vice President Al Gore stand to rake in billions on carbon taxes in the name of saving the planet. Under these new green schemes, we will get charged a tax on our carbon footprint which essentially amounts to little more than green guilt, as megacorporations will be allowed to continue to pollute the planet on a massive scale, causing way more damage than the average person can ever hope to do to the environment in their entire lifetime.

How the United Nations or anyone can say the average human being is harming the environment with a straight face while the government is already engaged in wide scale geoengineering projects based on bunk data that have untold detrimental short- and long-term impact around the entire globe on the environment and its flora and fauna — carrying out projects that have never been approved through any democratic process whatsoever and which we are still not officially being told is happening even as it goes on over our heads — is despicable.

“Covering Up The [Gulf] Oil Spill With Corexit Was a Deadly Action … What Happened In the Gulf Was a Political Act, an Act of Cowardice and Greed”
Sept 24, 2013 | Washington's Blog

A Tragedy Our Society Should Never Repeat

Preface: Additional interviews of leading government-affiliated experts concerning the Gulf oil spill here and here.

As we reported at the time, the EPA allowed BP to dump mass quantities of a highly-toxic chemical into the Gulf of Mexico in order to help BP hide the amount of oil in the Gulf … and to help to cover up what was really going on.

Last month, 60 Minutes made a fantastic exposé on the whole shenanigan.

We contacted Gulf toxicologist Dr. Susan Shaw – Founder and Director of the Marine Environmental Research Institute – for comment.  Background on Dr. Shaw’s involvement with the BP oil spill here and  here.

Dr. Shaw told Washington’s Blog:
It was refreshing to see such a strong public statement about what really happened in the Gulf of Mexico.

I was the first scientist to dive in the oil slick after the Deepwater Horizon explosion in 2010. As a member of DOI’s [the U.S. Department of the Interior's] Strategic Sciences Working Group (SSWG) and a TEDx speaker, I alerted federal agency heads and the public about the combined toxicity of Corexit and oil, and predicted much of the terrible human suffering and environmental damage we are seeing in the Gulf today. The Australian 60 Minutes report takes the viewer up close to the victims, Gulf residents and cleanup workers whose health problems are overwhelming and who will not recover, ever. As a public health professional, I interviewed residents of Grand Isle LA (“ground zero”) and experienced first hand what we now call the “Gulf syndrome” –  they had blinding headaches, memory loss, heart palpitations, internal bleeding, swollen livers, and skin lesions. Some had been sprayed directly with Corexit, often by planes flying at night. One was a 14 year old school girl who had periodic bleeding from her ears. As a scientist, I was stunned at the depth of suffering, the bewilderment, the loss.

Covering up the oil spill with Corexit was a deadly action that resulted in a tragedy our society should never repeat. For the federal government to make Corexit’s application the standard operating procedure for offshore oil spills is unacceptable. It is outrageous.

Below are links to my previous public statements about the danger and the duplicity of using Corexit to contain oil spills. Scientists know very well how toxic the mixture is. What happened in the Gulf was a political act, an act of cowardice and greed. It is time for Americans to know the truth.
Unfortunately, the government has a habit of covering up disasters – including not only oil spills, but everything from nuclear accidents to  financial problemsinstead of actually fixing the problems so that they won’t happen again.

95 per cent of intelligent people know the new IPCC report is utter drivel

© LifeWise
95 per cent of intelligent people know the new IPCC report is utter drivel
Sept 25, 2013 | LifeWise | James Delanpole

Experts 95 per cent certain ‘humans are responsible for global warming’.

Well, of course they are. If there is one overriding prerequisite of every new IPCC Assessment report, it’s to sound even more scary and urgent and certain than its predecessor.

Professor Bob Carter noted this progression in his excellent book Climate: the Counter Consensus:
First Assessment Report (1990) – “The observed [twentieth century] temperature increase could be largely due…to natural variability.”

Second Assessment Report (1996) – “The balance of the evidence suggests a discernible human influence on climate.”

Third Assessment Report (2001) – “There is new and stronger evidence that most of the warming observed over the last fifty years is attributable to human activities.”

Fourth Assessment Report (2007) – “Most of the observed increase in globally averaged temperature since the mid-twentieth century is very likely [= 90 per cent probable] due to the observed increase in anthropogenic greenhouse gas concentrations.”
The irony is, of course, that the third, fourth and fifth assessment reports were all produced in a period of rising CO2 levels in which there has been no “global warming” whatsoever. You’d imagine that, had the scientific method been more highly valued by the IPCC, this rather glaring flaw in AGW theory might have been afforded more prominence. But this is not the IPCC Assessment Reports’ job. As Christopher Bookerand others have often noted, the IPCC’s reports are essentially political artefacts rather than scientific ones. This is why some governments – including Germany’s and Belgium’s – have been manoeuvring behind the scenes to have the new IPCC report “sexed up”. The scientific reality – that global warming has paused for 15 years; that climate sensitivity appears to be far smaller than the scaremongering computer models predicted – cannot be allowed to derail all the expensive and intrusive programmes (from wind farms to green investment banks to hideous, flickery, dull low energy light bulbs) which have been introduced in order to “combat climate change.”

I don’t think many of my colleagues in the Fourth Estate have exactly covered themselves in glory in exposing what looks, increasingly, like the biggest pseudo-scientific scam in history. (Lysenkoism, for all its faults, at least confined itself to the Communist bloc. This one has affected the whole world). On the contrary, they have acted as its cheerleaders, reporting each new report as uncritically as Pravda journalists diligently covering the dazzling brilliance, humanity and insight of Comrade Stalin’s latest five hour speech on improved wheat yields and tractor production.

Andrew Bolt has been facing similar problems in Australia, especially with the irredeemably left-wing state broadcaster ABC.
For years, most in the mainstream media didn’t just refuse to question the great global warming scare, but howled down the few who dared to.

Journalists became propagandists, even witch-hunters. And the biggest cabal of them gathered in the ABC.

Four years ago,for instance, I was a panellist on the ABC’s Insiders program and mentioned the warming pause.

Fellow panellist David Marr asked me not to refer to it again and then ostentatiously buried his head in a newspaper. La la la la, not listening.

Marr, of course, was a former host of the ABC’s Media Watch, which for years, under various hosts, hounded warming sceptics and gave the Flannerys a free pass.

The other panellist was Annabel Crabb, now an ABC host. She, too, demanded we talk about something else, and on another Insiders show, mocked my quoting of scores of studies which showed the warming theory wasn’t working out as the likes of Flannery claimed.

“You put a million posts on your blog about some new study from the University of East Bumcrack,” she scoffed.
Then, of course, there is the Guardian/Observer, whose relentlessly hysterical, unfailingly uncritical coverage of the global warming scare is sharply analysed here by Ben Pile. Here’s how it begins:
In today’s Observer, Robin McKie channels scientists

Climate change: IPCC issues stark warning over global warming

Call to ‘stop dithering about fossil fuel cuts’ as expert panel warns entire globe is affected

This is now part of the ritual established by the Guardian whenever the routine, scheduled, planned, expected, and timetabled publishing of IPCC assessment reports or UNFCCC COP meetings occur. These events are in every case presented as always new, more comprehensive, deeper, and more ‘stark’ than previous pronouncements on climate change, even when the reports say very little or nothing at all that is new, and even suggest that things aren’t as bad ‘as previously thought’.

History Secrets: Earth Had Oxygen Much Earlier Than Thought

© Live Science
Earth Had Oxygen Much Earlier Than Thought
Sept 25, 2013 | Live Science

Oxygen may have filled Earth's atmosphere hundreds of millions of years earlier than previously thought, suggesting that sunlight-dependent life akin to modern plants evolved very early in Earth's history, a new study finds.

The findings, detailed in the Sept. 26 issue of the journal Nature, have implications for extraterrestrial life as well, hinting that oxygen-generating life could arise very early in a planet's history and potentially suggesting even more worlds could be inhabited around the universe than previously thought, the study's authors said.

It was once widely assumed that oxygen levels remained low in the atmosphere for about the first 2 billion years of Earth's 4.5-billion-year history. Scientists thought the first time oxygen suffused the atmosphere for any major length of time was about 2.3 billion years ago in what is called the Great Oxidation Event. This jump in oxygen levels was almost certainly due to cyanobacteria — microbes that, like plants, photosynthesize and exhale oxygen.

However, recent research examining ancient rock deposits had suggested that oxygen may have transiently existed in the atmosphere 2.6 billion to 2.7 billion years ago.

The new study pushes this boundary back even further, suggesting Earth's atmosphere became oxygenated about 3 billion years ago, more than 600 million years before the Great Oxidation Event. In turn, this suggests that something was around on the planet to put that oxygen in the atmosphere at this time.

"The fact oxygen is there requires oxygenic photosynthesis, a very complex metabolic pathway, very early in Earth's history," said researcher Sean Crowe, a biogeochemist at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. "That tells us it doesn't take long for biology to evolve very complex metabolic capabilities." [7 Theories on the Origin of Life]

Ancient oxygen reactions

Crowe and his colleagues analyzed levels of chromium and other metals in samples from South Africa that could serve as markers of reactions between atmospheric oxygen and minerals in Earth's rocks. They looked at both samples of ancient soil and marine sediments from about the same time period — 3 billion years ago.

The researchers focused on the different levels of chromium isotopeswithin their samples. Isotopes are variants of elements; all isotopes of an element have the same number of protons in their atoms, but each has a different number of neutrons — for instance, each atom of chromium-52 has 28 neutrons, while atoms of chromium-53 have 29.

When atmospheric oxygen reacts with rock — a process known as weathering —heavier chromium isotopes, such as chromium-53, often get washed out to sea by rivers. This means heavier chromium isotopes are often depleted from soils on land and enriched in sediments in the ocean when oxygen is around. These proportions of heavier chromium were just what were seen in the South African samples. Similar results were seen with other metals, such as uranium and iron, that hint at the presence of oxygen in the atmosphere.

"We now have the chemical tools to detect trace atmospheric gases billions of years ago," Crowe told LiveScience.

'Almost certainly biological'

All in all, the researchers suggest atmospheric oxygen levels 3 billion years ago were about 100,000 times higher than what can be explained by regular chemical reactions in Earth's atmosphere. "That suggests the source of this oxygen was almost certainly biological," Crowe said.

"It's exciting that it took a relatively short time for oxygenic photosynthesis to evolve on Earth," Crowe added. "It means that it could happen on other planets on Earth, expanding the number of worlds that could've developed oxygenated atmospheres and complex oxygen-breathing life."

Future research can look for similarly aged rocks from other places, both on and outside Earth, to confirm these findings. "Research could also look at earlier rocks," Crowe said. "Chances are, if there was oxygen 3 billion years ago, there was likely oxygen production some time before as well. How far back does it go?"

Are You Prepared For An Extremely Bitterly Cold Winter? Solar Activity Is At A 100 Year Low

Are You Prepared For An Extremely Bitterly Cold Winter? Solar Activity Is At A 100 Year Low
Sept 23, 2013 | The Truth Wins | Michael Synder

Are you ready for bone chilling cold this winter?  The Old Farmer’s Almanac and other weather forecasters that rely on solar activity as a factor in their weather forecasts are projecting that this upcoming winter will be bitterly cold.  Solar activity is at a 100 year low, and even though we were supposed to be in the midst of a solar maximum this year, our sun has been eerily quiet.  So precisely what in the world is going on?  There have been other periods throughout history when solar activity has been extraordinarily quiet, and those times have corresponded with periods of extreme cold.  For example, the “Maunder Minimum” which stretched from 1645 to 1715 corresponded with the most bitterly cold period that the earth experienced in the last 1000 years.  So could we be heading toward another “mini-ice age”?  That is a question that some scientists are now beginning to ask.

Clearly, something unusual is happening with our sun.  The following is from a Universe Today article that was posted back in July
Our nearest star has exhibited some schizophrenic behavior thus far for 2013.

By all rights, we should be in the throes of a solar maximum, an 11-year peak where the Sun is at its most active and dappled with sunspots.

Thus far though, Solar Cycle #24 has been off to a sputtering start, and researchers that attended the meeting of the American Astronomical Society’s Solar Physics Division earlier this month are divided as to why.“Not only is this the smallest cycle we’ve seen in the space age, it’s the smallest cycle in 100 years,” NASA/Marshall Space Flight Center research scientist David Hathaway said during a recent press teleconference conducted by the Marshall Space Flight Center.
In a previous article, I noted that scientists are absolutely baffled by this.  So far, nobody can explain why this solar cycle is so weak
The Sun is acting weird. It typically puts on a pageant of magnetic activity every 11 years for aurora watchers and sungazers alike, but this time it overslept. When it finally woke up (a year late), it gave the weakest performance in 100 years.
The good news is that this kind of thing has happened before.

The bad news is that when solar activity slows down dramatically it tends to correspond with extremely cold weather as the Times of India recently explained…
Predictions that 2013 would see an upsurge in solar activity and geomagnetic storms disrupting power grids and communications systems have proved to be a false alarm. Instead, the current peak in the solar cycle is the weakest for a century.
Subdued solar activity has prompted controversial comparisons with the Maunder Minimum, which occurred between 1645 and 1715, when a prolonged absence of sunspots and other indicators of solar activity coincided with the coldest period in the last millennium.
Certainly solar activity is just one of the factors that influences our weather and many other factors are involved as well.

But it is undeniable that during the last “Little Ice Age” in Europe there were very few sunspots
Times of depressed solar activity seem to correspond with times of global cold. For example, during the 70-year period from 1645 to 1715, few, if any, sunspots were seen, even during expected sunspot maximums. Western Europe entered a climate period known as the “Maunder Minimum” or “Little Ice Age.” Temperatures dropped by 1.8 to 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit.
Conversely, times of increased solar activity have corresponded with global warning. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the Sun was active, and the European climate was quite mild.
And the lull in solar activity that we are experiencing now is causing many, including the Old Farmer’s Almanac, to project that we have a bitterly cold winter ahead of us…
The Farmers’ Almanac is using words like “piercing cold,” “bitterly cold” and “biting cold” to describe the upcoming winter. And if its predictions are right, the first outdoor Super Bowl in years will be a messy “Storm Bowl.”
The 197-year-old publication that hits newsstands Monday predicts a winter storm will hit the Northeast around the time the Super Bowl is played at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands in New Jersey. It also predicts a colder-than-normal winter for two-thirds of the country and heavy snowfall in the Midwest, Great Lakes and New England.
“We’re using a very strong four-letter word to describe this winter, which is C-O-L-D. It’s going to be very cold,” said Sandi Duncan, managing editor.
That doesn’t sound very fun.

So has the Old Farmer’s Almanac been accurate in the past?

According to their website, they claim an 80 percent accuracy rate…
The Old Farmer’s Almanac, first published in 1792 during the first term of George Washington, has always watched the weather. Our famous long-range weather forecasts are traditionally 80 percent–accurate.
We will see what happens this year.

For North America, the Almanac is predicting that we will see “below-normal temperatures” and “above-normal snowfall”…
According to the newest edition of North America’s oldest continuously published periodical, a decline in solar activity combined with ocean-atmosphere patterns in the Pacific and Atlantic will result in below-normal temperatures and above-normal snowfall during most of the winter across much of the United States.

“This winter is shaping up to be a rough one,” says Janice Stillman, editor of The Old Farmer’s Almanac. “Sweaters and snow shovels should be unpacked early and kept close by throughout the season. The good news is that the extra precipitation—which will fall as rain or snow depending where you are—will help with any drought issues left over from the summer.”
So if you like winter weather, it looks like this will be a good year for you.

For the rest of us, we will just have to wear lots of warm clothing and stay inside a lot.

But of course the much bigger story is what this could mean for the years ahead.

Are we now moving into a time similar to the “Maunder Minimum” when solar activity will be very low and global temperatures will decrease?

Could it be possible that Matthew Penn of the National Solar Observatory and others are correct and that we are heading into a new mini-ice age?

Let’s certainly hope not, but without a doubt something very strange is happening to our sun.

Only time will tell what that means for our future.

27,000 gallons of oil spilled amid freak Colorado flooding

27,000 gallons of oil spilled amid freak Colorado flooding
Sept 23, 2013 | Raw Story | Suzanne Goldenberg, The Guardian

Inspectors have reached a third of state’s 50,000 sites and report eight ‘notable’ spills totalling 27,000 gallons of oil

Inspectors hunting for oil pipelines and oil drums damaged in Colorado’s epic floods are being “completely overwhelmed” by the sheer scale of destruction, a member of Congress has warned.

Jared Polis, a Democratic representative from Colorado, said the state’s regulatory agency was struggling to reach flooded areas and arrive at a full accounting of the damage and potential leaks to its 50,000 oil wells. Inspectors have so far reached about a third of the flooded oil fields. Last week, aerial surveys of the flooded area showed dozens of overturned storage tanks.

“Inspectors are completely overwhelmed. There are only a couple of dozen in the state and some areas remain inaccessible even today,” Polis told the Guardian. “The number of inspectors is insufficient to reach all the sites.”

On Monday the vice-president, Joe Biden, spent the day in Colorado, touring the devastated areas. The body of a 79-year-old woman was found beside the Big Thompson River, authorities said, bringing to eight the death toll from the massive flooding.

The state has 17 full-time oil and gas inspectors, although reinforcements have arrived in the wake of the floods. As of Monday afternoon, the state’s oil and gas regulator reported eight “notable” spills over the vast oil and gas area, which it said amounted to a release of some 27,000 gallons of oil. A statement from the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission said: “Wet, muddy and high-water conditions continue to make access slow and difficult in many areas.”

Todd Hartman, a spokesman for Colorado’s department of natural resources, said inspectors were still unable to get to many of the well sites, because roads were washed out or destroyed. “You have operations that are entirely underwater,” he told reporters.

In addition to the eight known leaks, crews were monitoring about 10 other sites with evidence of a sheen, the state regulatory agency said. But it said there were at least 33 other locations with damaged equipment. The agency added: “No estimates of product losses are available for those sites.”

The industry said it was monitoring the wells by air and from boats, as well as relying on pressure sensors to monitor conditions inside the wells. Rushing floodwaters clogged with debris damaged oil gas pipelines and tanks in a number of locations. But the oil industry said 1,500 oil wells in the worst affected area were sealed off before the floods hit.

Industry spokespersons also said there were no wells being fracked at the time of the floods, and there is no known instance of a leak of fracking chemicals.

Even so, campaigners said there was a risk of spills of oil, chemicals and other potential contaminants, including run-off from livestock facilities, in the wake of this month’s flooding. In one of the biggest known spills, Anadarko Petroleum Corp last week reported that about 5,225 gallons of oil had spilled into the South Platte River, near Milliken. A tank farm on the St Vrain River, also operated by Anadarko, released about 13,500 gallons. It is possible that other companies have suffered similar problems but have not been able to get out to assess the damage.

Jonathan Singer, a member of the state legislature from the flood-hit area who has opposed fracking, said his biggest concern was simply getting inspectors to all the well sites. “We just don’t have the resources to get out to every well as quickly as we should be,” he said.

“This was a huge flood and unfortunately it went through the county where we have the highest proportion of oil [and gas] wells in Colorado.”

History Secrets: US Air Force once dropped live hydrogen bomb on North Carolina - report

US Air Force once dropped live hydrogen bomb on North Carolina - report
Sept 20, 2013 | RT

The US Air Force inadvertently dropped an atomic bomb over North Carolina in 1961. If a simple safety switch had not prevented the explosive from detonating, millions of lives across the northeast would have been at risk, a new document has revealed.

The revelation offers the first conclusive evidence after decades of speculation that the US military narrowly avoided a self-inflicted disaster. The incident is explained in detail in a recently declassified document written by Parker F. Jones, supervisor of the nuclear weapons safety department at Sandia National Laboratories.

The document - written in 1969 and titled “How I Learned to Mistrust the H-bomb,” a play on the Stanley Kubrick film title “Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb” - was disclosed to the Guardian by journalist Eric Schlosser.

Three days after President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, a B-52 bomber carrying two Mark 39 hydrogen bombs departed from Goldsboro, North Carolina on a routine flight along the East Coast. The plane soon went into a tailspin, throwing the bombs from the B-52 into the air within striking distance of multiple major metropolitan centers.

Each of the explosives carried a payload of 4 megatons - roughly the same as four million tons of TNT explosive - which could have triggered a blast 260 times more powerful than the atomic bomb that wiped out Hiroshima at the end of World War II.

One of the bombs performed in the same way as those dropped over Japan less than 20 years before - by opening its parachute and engaging its trigger mechanisms. The only thing that prevented untold thousands, or perhaps millions, from being killed was a simple low voltage switch that failed to flip.

Reuters
That hydrogen bomb, known as MK 39 Mod 2, descended onto tree branches in Faro, North Carolina, while the second explosive landed peacefully off Big Daddy’s Road in Pikeville. Jones determined that three of the four switches designed to prevent unintended detonation on MK 39 Mod 2 failed to work properly, and when a final firing signal was triggered that fourth switch was the only safeguard that worked.

Nuclear fallout from a detonation could have risked millions of lives in Baltimore, Washington DC, Philadelphia, New York City, and the areas in between.

The MK Mod 2 bomb did not possess adequate safety for the airborne alert role in the B-52,” Jones wrote in his 1969 assessment. He determined “one simple, dynamo-technology, low voltage switch stood between the United States and a major catastrophe…It would have been bad news – in spades.”

Before Schlosser brought the document to light through a Freedom of Information Act request, the US government long denied that any such event ever took place.

The US government has consistently tried to withhold information from the American people in order to prevent questions being asked about our nuclear weapons policy,” he told the Guardian. “We were told there was no possibility of these weapons accidentally detonating, yet here’s one that very nearly did.”

In “Command and Control,” Schlosser’s new book on the nuclear arms race between the US and the Soviet Union, the journalist writes that he discovered a minimum of 700 “significant” accidents involving nuclear weapons in the years between 1950 and 1968.

World's Top Climate Scientists Admit "Computers" Got Global Warming Wrong
Sept 16, 2013 | Alt-Market | Brandon Smith

If Climate Gate didn't silence the great global warming cult, then perhaps this will.  Climate scientists themselves now admit their calculations on global warming were WRONG, though they divert blame to glitchy computer models.  The reality is that all mainstream climate science to date has been fraudulent, and the fact that organizations like NASA and the CRU continually refuse to release the source data for their experiments to the public proves that they have been at least partially if not fully aware of the fraud.  Man-made climate change has been used as an excuse to fashion draconian environmental regulations that if implemented, will essentially tax the very air we breath, and set into motion the fantastical lie of "carbon pollution", which regards the very act of human existence as a threat to the stability of the Earth's biosphere.  It's an elitist's wet dream.  Thankfully, the Liberty Movement and legitimate researchers have exposed the scam, making the enforcement of carbon controls on a wide scale almost impossible.

Read the leaked IPCC Report here:
http://www.stopgreensuicide.com/

Climate Scientists in Australia are claiming that the leaked report has been misrepresented by "skeptics".
http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/international/radio/program/pacific-beat/scientists-criticise-reporting-of-ipcc-leak/1191262

Doctor John Cook, Research Fellow in Climate Communication at the Global Change Institute at the University of Queensland claims that news sources misquoted a .2C per decade temperature rise in the 2007 IPCC Report.  However, I found this prediction blatantly printed in the 2007 IPCC Report under the section - "Model Based Projections For The Future".  Here is the quote:

"A temperature rise of about 0.2 °C per decade is projected for the next two decades for all SRES scenarios."
http://www.ipcc.ch/publications_and_data/publications_ipcc_fourth_assessment_report_synthesis_report.htm

So it would seem that the latest report does indeed contradict the IPCC's 2007 predictions and cuts temperature increases in half.  Cook apparently does not know how to read.

Here are just some of the latest mainstream quotes on the leaked report:

A leaked copy of the world’s most authoritative climate study reveals scientific forecasts of imminent doom were drastically wrong. The Mail on Sunday has obtained the final draft of a report to be published later this month by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), the ultimate watchdog whose massive, six-yearly ‘assessments’ are accepted by environmentalists, politicians and experts as the gospel of climate science. The IPCC recognises the global warming ‘pause’ first reported by The Mail on Sunday last year is real – and concede that their computer models did not predict it. But they cannot explain why world average temperatures have not shown any statistically significant increase since 1997. –David Rose, Mail on Sunday, 15 September 2013

Last night Professor Judith Curry, head of climate science at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, said the leaked Summary for Policy-makers showed that ‘the science is clearly not settled, and is in a state of flux’. She said  it therefore made no sense that the IPCC was claiming that its confidence in its forecasts and conclusions has increased. ‘The consensus-seeking process used by the IPCC creates and amplifies biases in the science. It should be abandoned in favour of a more traditional review that presents arguments for and against – which would  better support scientific progress, and be more useful for policy makers.’ –David Rose, Mail on Sunday, 15 September 2013

Dr Benny Peiser, of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, described the leaked report as a ‘staggering concoction of confusion, speculation and sheer ignorance’.  As for the pause, he said ‘it would appear that the IPCC is running out of answers … to explain why there is a widening gap between predictions and reality’. –David Rose, Mail on Sunday, 15 September 2013

The British Met Office has issued ‘erroneous statements  and misrepresentations’ about  the pause in global warming  – and its climate computer model is fundamentally flawed, says  a new analysis by a leading independent researcher. Nic Lewis, a climate scientist and accredited ‘expert reviewer’ for the IPCC, also points out that Met Office’s flagship climate model suggests the world  will warm by twice as much in response to CO2 as some other leading institutes, such as Nasa’s climate centre in America. –David Rose, Mail on Sunday, 15 September 2013

Since the last IPCC report in 2007, much has changed. It is now more than 15 years since global average temperature rose significantly. Indeed, the IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri has conceded that the “pause” already may have lasted for 17 years, depending on which data set you look at. A recent study in Nature Climate Change by Francis Zwiers and colleagues of the University of Victoria, British Columbia, found that models have overestimated warming by 100% over the past 20 years. Explaining this failure is now a cottage industry in climate science. The most plausible explanation of the pause is simply that climate sensitivity was overestimated in the models because of faulty assumptions about net amplification through water-vapor feedback. This will be a topic of heated debate at the political session to rewrite the report in Stockholm, starting on Sept. 23, at which issues other than the actual science of climate change will be at stake. –Matt Ridley, The Wall Street Journal, 14 September 2013

There is a degree of nervousness internationally that the central climate change message is being lost as efforts are being made to build a global agreement. The concern is the Abbott government’s change of heart on a carbon tax will encourage other countries to delay or weaken their commitment. The election of an Abbott government has focused attention on Australia. Former prime minister John Howard has been booked to deliver this year’s Global Warming Policy Foundation lecture in November. The title of his address: One Religion is Enough. –Graham Lloyd, The Australian, 14 September 2013

A new study in the journal Nature Climate Change that compared 117 climate predictions made in the 1990′s to the actual amount of warming finds that 99% of them overestimated the amount of warming. On average, the predictions forecasted two times more global warming than actually occurred. –Maxim Lott, Fox News, 12 September 2013

Scientists have had only limited success persuading us to care about climate change so perhaps it is time to call in the philosophers. That appears to be the approach of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which has engaged a philosopher to help to produce its forthcoming report on how to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. Professor Broome’s role appears to be to rein in the economists in the IPCC team and remind them to take ethics into account when considering how much governments should spend on cutting emissions. He contributed to Lord Stern’s Review of the Economics of Climate Change, which was criticised by many economists for justifying spending billions of pounds mitigating climate change by attaching a much higher value to goods available in the next century. –Ben Webster, The Times, 11 September 2013

Four Horsemen - Feature Documentary - Official Version

Four Horsemen - Feature Documentary - Official Version
Sept 13, 2013 | RenegadeEconomist

FOUR HORSEMEN is an independent feature documentary which lifts the lid on how the world really works.

As we will never return to 'business as usual' 23 international thinkers, government advisors and Wall Street money-men break their silence and explain how to establish a moral and just society.

FOUR HORSEMEN is free from mainstream media propaganda -- the film doesn't bash bankers, criticise politicians or get involved in conspiracy theories. It ignites the debate about how to usher a new economic paradigm into the world which would dramatically improve the quality of life for billions.

"It's Inside Job with bells on, and a frequently compelling thesis thanks to Ashcroft's crack team of talking heads -- economists, whistleblowers and Noam Chomsky, all talking with candour and clarity." - Total Film

"Four Horsemen is a breathtakingly composed jeremiad against the folly of Neo-classical economics and the threats it represents to all we should hold dear."
- Harold Crooks, The Corporation (Co-Director) Surviving Progress (Co-Director/Co-Writer)
