Comet Will Buzz Mars Sunday: How to See It in Telescopes

A comet is on course for a super-close approach to the planet Mars this Sunday (Oct. 19) in a rare celestial encounter. And if you have a moderate-size telescope, you just might be able to spot the icy wanderer as it nears the Red Planet, weather permitting.

The comet in question is Comet Siding Spring, which was discovered on Jan. 3, 2013 by the Scottish-Australian astronomer Robert H. McNaught, a prolific observer of both comets and asteroids. McNaught has discovered 82 previously unseen comets, including a stupendously bright one that briefly became visible to the naked eye in broad daylight in January 2007.

New study supports binary star system hypothesis!

(Phys.org) - Imagine living on an exoplanet with two suns. One, you orbit and the other is a very bright, nearby neighbor looming large in your sky. With this "second sun" in the sky, nightfall might be a rare event, perhaps only coming seasonally to your planet. A new study suggests that this could be far more common than we realized.

The NASA Kepler Space Telescope has confirmed about 1000 exoplanets, as well as thousands more stars considered "Kepler objects of interest", dubbed KOIs - stars that could possibly host planets.

Until now, there has been an unanswered question about exoplanet host stars; how many host stars are binaries? Binary stars have long been known to be commonplace - about half the stars in the sky are believed to consist of two stars orbiting each other. So, are stars with planets equally likely to have a companion star, or do companion stars affect the formation of planets?

A team of astronomers, led by Dr. Elliott Horch, Southern Connecticut State University, have shown that stars with exoplanets are just as likely to have a binary companion: that is, 40% to 50% of the host stars are actually binary stars. As Dr. Horch said, "It's interesting and exciting that exoplanet systems with stellar companions turn out to be much more common than was believed even just a few years ago."

But it's summer? Return of polar vortex to trigger midwest storms, chill

While the effect of the July sun and warm landscape will cancel some of the cool air, it will become surprisingly cool during what is typically the hottest time of the year.

According to AccuWeather Meteorologist Carl Erickson, "The pattern is reminiscent of a major polar plunge that occurred this past winter, which was referred to as the Polar Vortex."


A piece of the Polar Vortex, and a summertime version at that will break off from the Arctic and drop southward this coming week.

The pattern will not bring snow or sub-zero cold but it will bring angry clouds, cool air and the risk of waterspouts over the warmer portions of Great Lakes.

The pattern will deliver multiple days with high temperatures in the lower 70s in Chicago and Detroit and even a day or two with highs in the 60s in Minneapolis and other parts of the Upper Midwest.

For fans heading to the All-Star Game at Minneapolis, the it may seem more like football weather. Jackets and long sleeves may be needed by many fans to stay comfortable.

At night, temperatures could challenge record lows from the Midwest. Temperatures will drop into the 50s at night in many cities and will dip into the 40s in some of the suburbs and rural areas.

The cooler air will move in aloft before reaching ground level. As this happens, an unstable atmosphere will trigger episodes of thunderstorms, some of which will be severe in parts of the region.

On Saturday, the severe weather threat will shift eastward and southward over the Central states. The storms are forecast to extend across portions of Iowa, Illinois and southern Wisconsin.

The major threats from these storms will be damaging wind gusts and hail.

The severe storms spanning Saturday into Sunday could reach the metro areas of Omaha, Nebraska, Des Moines, Iowa, Chicago, and Detroit with the risks of power outages, property damage and travel disruptions.

Storms packing gusty winds, hail and locally heavy rain will also target areas from Montana to Wyoming, Colorado and the Nebraska Panhandle on Saturday.

Sunday and Monday, the threat of severe weather will continue in portions of the Ohio Valley and will ramp up in the Northeast. The greatest threats these days will be damaging wind gusts, flash flooding and frequent lightning strikes.

After the cool air takes root in the Midwest during the early and middle portion of next week, waterspouts will be a threat to boaters, fishing and beach interests over the southern portion of the Great Lakes.

Earth & moon 60 million years older than previously thought

The timing of the giant impact between Earth’s ancestor and another planet-sized body happened 40 million years after the start of the solar system. This means Earth is a bit of an older lady than previously thought.

New research by Geochemists from the University of Lorraine in Nancy, eastern France, was presented at the Goldschmidt Geochemistry Conference in Sacramento, California.

The scientists measured changes in the proportions of different gases (known as isotopes) which have survived in some rocks from when Earth was very young.

Bernard Marty and Guillaume Avice, two of the key scientists in the research, analyzed xenon gas, found in South African and Australian quartz, which was found to be 3.4 and 2.7 billion years old respectively.

This is because the gas sealed in the xenon is in a ‘time capsule’, which allows scientists to compare the current isotopic ratios of xenon with those that existed billions of years ago.

This allowed them to estimate when Earth began to form.

“The xenon gas signals allow us to calculate when the atmosphere was being formed, which was probably at the time the Earth collided with a planet-sized body, leading to the formation of the moon. Our results mean that both the earth and the moon are older than we had thought,” said Avice.

The time Earth was formed had previously been estimated at around 100 million years after the formation of the solar system and as the atmosphere would not have survived the moon-forming impact, this new data puts the formation of the Earth at just 40 million years after the solar system formation.

“This might seem a small difference, but it is important. These differences set time boundaries on how the planets evolved, especially through major collisions in deep time which shaped the solar system,” said Marty.

In a separate paper published in Science last week, new evidence from the Apollo missions of the 1970s has been analyzed, showing traces of material to support the hypothesis that the formation of the moon was the result of a giant collision between Earth and another Mars-sized planet.

The debris from this impact about 4.5 billion years ago is believed to have resulted in the formation of the moon.

The structure of the comet's tail and its relative brightness at such a large heliocentric distance remains a mystery for comet scientists.

The asteroid Chariklo, which is 250 km in diameter and orbits between Saturn and Uranus, displays two rings which are said to be similar in nature to those of Saturn. The Leonid meteor shower, one of the most dependable meteor displays of the year, will be at its most impressive overnight Saturday and early Sunday. For the best viewing, stargazers are advised to lie down on the ground, far away from artificial light.

The annual meteor shower occurs each November when the earth passes through a stream of space debris left in the wake of the Temple-Tuttle comet.

As the icy comet streaks towards the sun, it is slowly melting. It reaches the Solar System once every 33 years, leaving a rocky trail millions of miles wide and hundreds of miles long. As the earth moves through the comet’s orbital path, the debris burns up in the atmosphere, causing what looks like shooting starts to dance across the night sky.

Some of the rocky trail drifts into earth’s orbit every November. The debris collides with the earth’s atmosphere and the rocks are vaporized in a flash, giving the illusion of fireballs exploding out of the constellation Leo.

Although the meteor shower takes place on a smaller scale every year, it is truly breathtaking every 33 years, with more than 1,000 meteors lighting the sky every hour. This kind of display will not happen until 2034.

This year, the meteor shower will be partially obscured by the full moon.

Unfortunately the full moon in the sky will likely wash out all but the very brightest Leonids. The shower should be visible from any populated area on the planet with clear dark skies, though Northern Hemisphere observers are favored due to the radiant’s location in the constellation Leo,” officials from NASA explained in a skywatching guide.

They added that for the best view, stargazers should lie on the ground and look straight up into the dark sky, away from artificial lights.

However, NASA is not able to predict the intensity of the display, as there is no way of knowing how much debris is in each stream.

In 1833, observers could see up to 100,000 meteors per hour, while in 1966 viewers watched 10-15 meteors light up the sky per second. The last meteor shower like this was in 2002.

The best time to view the shower is not during its peak. Rather, it will be best viewed on Friday night between midnight and dawn, or even as late as mid-week next week during the same time, according to Space.com.

Editor's note: The push for global warming consensus attains category quickly in our society, either you're a fracking, drill baby drill nut, or your one of those environmental nuts. The truthful consensus shows that what is occurring climatically is a change in our solar system of which affects all planets. With this knowledge, we assume that climate change is out of our control.

This more obvious assumption comes from the observations we've made inside our galaxy, and especially that of solar activity. However, this does not remove our responsibilities to the type of exposures we encounter which have been out of our control by force, such as GMOs that infest and then spread in our environment. We may assume that the things we are exposed to are controlled by us, but when we consider our energy consumption and practices, we immediately conclude we are at risk. The collision between population and exposure is more or less controlled by corporations and banks, not us.

If we learn to control this association ourselves (such as boycotts, etc.), then we may thwart the notions of Agenda 21 more accurately and efficiently. The Federal Reserve has already attempted this through bailouts, however, in doing so, it is a crime where this avenue of control is given to banks and select corporations.

We may learn that control is the primary objective in all of this rhetoric, and the fact that we may not be in control will not be accepted and this reveals those that wish to control are exposed, part of the architypical construct that is being addressed.

Underneath this is security and we can see the attempts to secure mostly profits and to ensure corporations are not allowed to fail when this is the proper and natural process of healing and learning that Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde actually exist.

So, I present the following case file for study which addresses Agenda 21 remembering the complexities that surround interpretation and the rampart geoengineering which in fact converts population to dollars as CO2 smart cities. Please leave your comments below.

Astronomers on Wednesday reported their best observation yet of a massive star embryo growing within a dark cloud — the largest stellar “womb” ever spotted in our Milky Way galaxy.

The star, which could grow to 100 times the mass of our Sun and up to a million times brighter, was spotted by the most powerful radio telescope on Earth — the ALMA international astronomy facility located in Chile, according to a paper published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Astronomers hope its discovery, at a distance of some 11,000 light years from Earth, will shed light on how these exceptionally massive stars are formed, shrouded as they are in dust and mystery.

“Not only are these stars rare, but their births are extremely rapid and childhood short, so finding such a massive object so early in its evolution in our Galaxy is a spectacular result,” study co-author Gary Fuller of the University of Manchester said in a statement issued by the European Southern Observatory (ESO)

The most massive and brightest stars in the galaxy form within cool and dark cloud cores, hungrily feeding on material being dragged inwards by the embryo star’s gravitational pull.

This specific star is located in the Spitzer Dark Cloud, whose core has a mass about 500 times that of the Sun.

“This object is expected to form a star that is up to 100 times more massive than the Sun. Only about one in ten thousand of all stars in the Milky Way reach that kind of mass,” said study lead author Nicolas Peretto of Cardiff University.

“The remarkable observations from ALMA allowed us to get the first really in-depth look at what was going on within this cloud. We wanted to see how monster stars form and grow, and we certainly achieved our aim. One of the sources we have found is an absolute giant — the largest protostellar core ever spotted in the Milky Way!”

According to the ESO, there are two theories on the formation of massive stars, which have at least ten times the mass of our Sun.

The first theory suggests that parental dark clouds fragment, creating several small cores that collapse and form stars. The other sees the entire cloud collapse inwards, with material racing into its centre to feed the star or stars growing there.

The new results support the second theory, said the statement.

“The ALMA observations reveal the spectacular details of the motions of the filamentary network of dust and gas and show that a huge amount of gas is flowing into a central compact region,” said team member Ana Duarte Cabral from the Laboratoire d’Astrophysique in Bordeaux, France.

The find was made possible by the high sensitivity of the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array, located 5,000 meters (16,400 feet) above sea level, deep in Chile’s Atacama Desert.

ALMA has 66 antennas exploring the universe via radio waves emitted by galaxies, stars and other bodies not captured by optical and infrared telescopes, which only receive light.

Why do planets farthest from the Sun have the fastest winds?

Earth’s average wind speed is approximately 56 kilometers per hour, with a maximum of 372 kilometer per hour gust recorded on Mount Washington, New Hampshire in 1934. Some isolated wind phenomena, such as tornadoes and hurricanes, can sustain average velocities of 480 and 320 kilometers per hour for short periods. The maximum 24 hour speed record of 205 kilometers per hour from 1934 still remains, however.

Tornadoes continue to be a mystery to consensus science, as well as Electric Universe advocates, although it seems that they are more like rotating electric discharges than anything else. The electric charges in a tornado are whirling at many meters per second, so they probably form an electromagnetic field called a “charge sheath vortex.”

It is commonly believed that weather is driven on Earth primarily by the Sun’s thermal influence on the atmosphere. As we rotate beneath our primary, gases and dust absorb solar radiation at varying rates and in varying degrees. When any particular region heats up, the air expands and loses density, creating a relative low pressure area. Cooler air, being denser, will naturally flow into the bottom of the warm, low pressure region, causing an upwardly rotating convection cell to form.

Most weather systems on Earth are thought to be based on that simple kinetic explanation: winds blow when the cooler, denser air flows into the warmer, buoyant air.

The kinetic model of weather does not take into account the fact that planets much farther out in the Solar System have sustained winds that make those on our planet seem like gentle breezes. The average wind speeds on the gas giant planets are fantastic.

Jupiter’s winds clock at 635 kilometers per hour around the Great Red Spot; Saturn’s average wind speed is up to 1800 kilometers per hour; Uranus 900 kilometers per hour; and Neptune comes in at 1138 kilometers per hour. On Neptune the winds are blowing through an atmosphere that measures minus 220 degrees Celsius. Why is it that the most remote planets, receiving small fractions of the solar energy bathing Earth, are able to convert that small fraction into much larger effects?

As mentioned in previous Pictures of the Day, Earth is a small charged body moving in a large cell of plasma, so physical phenomena on or near the planet must take the electrical nature of plasma into account. Contemplating the larger picture will help to add new details to the study of everyday phenomena, such as the weather.

Lightning could be the force that powers the wind. Neptune has some of the strongest winds of any planet in the Solar System, yet it is farthest from the Sun. Perhaps hurricanes, tornadoes, and even prevailing winds are due to the electric currents endemic to planetary atmospheres?

The Electric Universe hypothesis agrees with conventional theory that wind is movement of air molecules, but that there are other explanations. What are those other agents of movement?

If conventional theory explains wind solely as the result of convection and gas kinetics, Electric Universe proponents insist that electric discharges must also be considered. Electromagnetic forces in plasma move and accelerate charged particles, so collisions between charged and neutral particles drag the neutral air molecules along with them. Close observation of laboratory arc discharges reveals that an electric “wind” surrounds and often precedes an electric arc.

The plasma discharge sweeps up the surrounding air along with the charge carriers, or ions. The wind appears as inflows and updrafts as well as outflows and downdrafts. It can lift dust particles and erode surfaces. By analogy, we must then question the accepted explanation of thunderstorms as being caused solely by convection of hot air and the climatological movement of winds by the Sun’s heat alone.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) – Reports last summer than NASA’s long-lived Voyager 1 space probe had finally left the solar system turned out to be a bit premature, scientists said on Thursday.

Rather, the spacecraft, which was launched in 1977 for a five-year mission to study Jupiter and Saturn, has found itself in a previously unknown region between the outermost part of the solar system and interstellar space.

It is an unusual and unexpected thoroughfare, a place where charged particles from the sun have virtually disappeared and those coming from galactic cosmic rays beyond the solar system are plentiful.

By that measure alone, scientists initially thought Voyager 1 did indeed finally reach interstellar space on August 25, 2012, becoming the first man-made object to leave the solar system.

But one key measurement killed that theory. The magnetic field in which Voyager 1 traveled was still aligned like the sun’s. If the probe were truly in interstellar space, scientists expect that the direction of the magnetic field would be different.

“You can never exclude a really peculiar coincidence, but this was very strong evidence that we’re still in the heliosheath” – the bubble of plasma from the sun that surrounds the solar system, said Voyager scientist Leonard Burlaga, with NASA’s Goddard Space Fight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

Additional measurements later turned up a second odd reading. The cosmic ray particles were not uniformly distributed around Voyager 1 like scientists expected them to be in interstellar space. Instead, the charged particles, which stem from distant supernova explosions, were oriented in particular directions.

That led scientists to conclude that Voyager 1 was in some sort of magnetic boundary zone, where particles from inside and outside the solar system could easily swap places, but where the sun’s influence still reigns supreme.

“We have no explanation for why we even found this new region,” Burlaga told Reuters.

So far, Voyager’s sister probe, Voyager 2, which is exiting the solar system in a different direction, has not encountered the same phenomena – nor may it ever.

“Voyager 2 has seen exactly what the models predicted we would see, unlike Voyager 1, which didn’t,” said lead scientist Ed Stone, with the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, California.

Voyager 1 may be in an unusual place where the heliosheath and interstellar space connect, he added.
Voyager 1 is now about 11 billion miles (18 billion km) from Earth. At that distance, it takes radio signals, which move at the speed of light, 17 hours to make a one-way trip to Earth.

Scientists do not know how much farther Voyager has to travel to reach interstellar space. The spacecraft, which is powered by the slow decay of radioactive plutonium, will begin running out of energy for its science instruments in 2020. By 2025, it will be completely out of power.

The research appears in the journal Science this week.
