Comet Will Buzz Mars Sunday: How to See It in Telescopes

A comet is on course for a super-close approach to the planet Mars this Sunday (Oct. 19) in a rare celestial encounter. And if you have a moderate-size telescope, you just might be able to spot the icy wanderer as it nears the Red Planet, weather permitting.

The comet in question is Comet Siding Spring, which was discovered on Jan. 3, 2013 by the Scottish-Australian astronomer Robert H. McNaught, a prolific observer of both comets and asteroids. McNaught has discovered 82 previously unseen comets, including a stupendously bright one that briefly became visible to the naked eye in broad daylight in January 2007.

Groups Demand End of Everglades Oil Drilling, Fracking And Fix Water Problems

Citizens draw the line against new oil drilling in Greater Everglades after unauthorized fracking threatens water supplies and triggers county and state lawsuits; they call on Scott to shut down all new Everglades oil drilling and update state regulations to 1) ban fracking and all forms of extreme extraction, 2) set a one mile buffer zone from drill site to family home, 3) secure DEP stronger enforcement powers, with significant penalties and fines.

NAPLES, FL—The Stonecrab Alliance, Food & Water Watch, Clean Water Initiative, and ReThink Energy Florida are organizing an "It's All About the Water" march to Governor's Rick Scott's beachfront home starting at 4 p.m., Saturday, October 18, beginning at the Naples Pier.  The groups intend to shut down new Everglades oil drilling and fracking and urge Scott to fix a broad range of water problems in Florida.  By land and by sea, participants will march on the beach and paddle from the Naples Pier to the Governor's beachfront home.  Banners, signs, and flags will spell out concerns.  Solidarity Fish from the east coast will make visible the need to send clean water south from Lake Okeechobee.

Participants will bring their own "troubled waters" samples in containers marked with location and date to vividly show the variety of water problems Florida faces from drilling, fracking, the BP oil spill, Lake Okeechobee water releases, and more.  In the Governor's beachfront backyard participants will deliver their troubled waters, enjoy music, participate in a water blessing from the Miccosukee Otter Clan, and listen to speakers.  Speakers will map out solutions for water problems such as banning new drilling and fracking, cleaning toxic Lake Okeechobee discharges, sending clean water south to restore the Everglades, curbing agricultural and industrial run-off, denying permits for gas-fired power plants and pipelines, investing in clean, renewable energy to curb sea-level rise and climate change.  Closing with a candlelight vigil and wish lanterns, they'll invite everyone, from legislators to land barons, to partner with them in saving Florida's waters and Everglades.

The march follows fast on a milestone victory for citizens — after unauthorized fracking threatened water supplies and wetlands.  Faced with fines, penalties, protests, and lawsuits, Dan A. Hughes has abandoned all plans to explore for oil in Florida.  The Texas oil company terminated its 115,000 acre lease while the state revoked all its permits and filed a lawsuit for clean up.  This means 115,000 acres in the heart of the Everglades, some, only 1000 feet from homes, has been saved from drilling and fracking.  Most significantly, the proposed drill site that had placed 30 families in an Emergency Evacuation Zone has been turned into a watermelon field.  Although citizens are still celebrating the shutdown of Hughes, the company has countersued the state and other oil companies have leased an additional 330,000 acres so the struggle for the Everglades and clean water escalates.

Governor Scott's support of the oil industry has fueled the expansion of new drilling in Florida.  Residents and environmentalists say they don't want another Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill—with its long chain of documented misjudgments, operational failings, and oversight mistakes.  They want to protect the aquifers that supply Florida with its drinking water and save the watersheds that sustain wetlands.  "It's about our water," they say.  Accidents happen.   Over time pipes leak.  Injected chemicals surface.  And even cement casings fail.  One accident could ruin a community's aquifer.  The risks are too great and benefits, too small.  Drilling is not in the public interest—especially not in Florida since its limestone geology sources the state's drinking water and is extremely porous and highly susceptible to groundwater contamination.  A sign sums up the problem: "Can't Clean up an Aquifer:  Don't Drill."

Americans Have Wages Garnished and Assets Seized over Homes They Already Lost

Thousands of Americans are being chased by zombies—zombie loans that is.

Many of those who lost homes in the housing crisis last decade are finding that their nightmare still is not over. That’s because banks are still pursuing them over the mortgages they defaulted on, according to Reuters.

Settlements that followed often did not cover the remaining balance on the loan. This has led to “deficiency judgments,” in which debt collectors are now hunting down the former homeowners. In many cases, the judgments result in frozen bank accounts, garnished wages and seized assets.

“The two big government-controlled housing finance companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as well as other mortgage players, are increasingly pressing borrowers to pay whatever they still owe on mortgages they defaulted on years ago,” Reuters’ Michelle Conlin wrote.

From January 2010 through June 2012, Fannie Mae referred 293,134 foreclosure cases to debt collectors for possible pursuit of deficiency judgments, according to a 2013 report by the Inspector General for the agency’s regulator, the Federal Housing Finance Agency.

“This is monumentally unfair and damaging to the economy,” Ira Rheingold, the executive director of the National Association of Consumer Advocates, told Reuters. “It prevents people from moving forward with their lives.”

Danell Huthsing of Jacksonville, Florida, wound up being pursued for her share of a mortgage after breaking up with her boyfriend, with whom she shared a house. “For seven years you think you’re good to go, that you’ve put this behind you,” Huthsing told Conlin. “Then wham, you get slapped to the floor again.”

If you went through foreclosure with Bank of America, Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase or Citibank, you may be in luck. Those institutions typically do not pursue deficiency judgments, although they reserve the right to do so, Reuters reported.

Wildlife Put at Risk from Dumping of Pharmaceuticals

Hundreds of millions of pounds of pharmaceuticals are dumped into wastewater systems each year, posing serious threats to many species and ecosystems, researchers say.

Multiple studies show that drugs discarded into systems carrying human and animal waste have contaminated the environments upon which wildlife depends. In some cases, the consumption of pharmaceuticals can prove deadly for animals.

The antidepressant fluoxetine has caused starlings to spend less time foraging for food, one study found, while contraceptives flushed into lakes have reduced fish populations.
Other research has revealed anti-inflammatory drugs fed to cattle in India can wind up killing vultures that feed on the animals’ carcasses.

Drugs are often disposed of in wastewater systems by hospitals, nursing homes, prisons and other facilities where many people are on medication. There’s currently no rule that forbids this practice and as a result, some facilities dispose of 1,000 or more pills a month in this way.

Drugs make their way from sewer systems into waterways where even trace amount of pharmaceuticals can have a negative effect on wildlife.

“With thousands of pharmaceuticals in use globally, they have the potential to have potent effects on wildlife and ecosystems,” Kathryn Arnold of the University of York, told The Guardian. ”Given the many benefits of pharmaceuticals, there is a need for science to deliver better estimates of the environmental risks they pose.”

The Environmental Protection Agency is working on a proposal to manage pharmaceutical waste, but any rule might be a long time coming. The agency attempted to impose standards in 2008, but never finalized the rule.

Study finds fracking triggered 400 earthquakes in Ohio

A new study on the practice of hydraulic fracturing has found a direct connection to some 400 micro-earthquakes in an Ohio town. This is the second report on the Utica Shale this year. The town is one of very few where the quakes took place on a fault.

The new study, published Tuesday in the journal Seismological Research Letters, focuses on the eastern town of Canton, Harrison County, and three particular wells. It has found that the three wells operated in September-October 2013 in the Utica Shale caused 10 quakes of magnitude 1.7-2.2, among others.
But the case of Harrison County is one of a very few where, according to seismologist and lead author Paul Friberg, the quakes happened on a fault line.

Other locations where this happened included the United Kingdom, British Columbia in Canada and Poland Township, Ohio, according to LiveScience.

An earlier March study led to scientists with Ohio’s Department of Natural Resources to shut down seven other wells in the Poland Township after fracking there led to two small quakes.

The current spate of Harrison County quakes struck less than 1.4km (1 mile) below ground, with tremors starting to be felt 26 hours after fracking started on September 29, 2013. This was followed by a total of 190 earthquakes in the 39 hours just two days later. When the pressure stopped, so did the quakes, according to the study.


Ohio Department of Natural Resources spokeswoman Bethany McCorkle told the AP that over the past year new seismic monitoring equipment has been installed in eastern Ohio in order to monitor for stronger quakes.

There is also an opinion that some underground dangers cannot be spotted until hydraulic fracturing is carried out there. In this sense, the findings can be used to prevent further, worse quakes.

It has been known for a while that hydraulic fracturing – which implies pumping huge quantities of water, chemicals and sand into rock to shatter it and extract oil and gas – leads to earthquakes. But it was previously thought that the effect is negligible. Now a growing body of evidence seems to suggest otherwise.

Rowena Lohman, an assistant professor of geophysics at Cornell University, who was not involved in the study, told AP that the oil and gas community have “known for a really long time, going back to the '70s, that when you do any subsurface manipulation you cause small earthquakes,” but also that “the big question is: are we doing something now that increases the probability that it will induce larger quakes?”

It was found in another, unrelated study that just four wastewater wells in Oklahoma – where water is stored after fracking completes – are to blame for a massive number of earthquakes this year all taking place within a 30km radius.


As with Ohio, incidences of earthquakes increasing as a result of fracking have been witnessed largely in Oklahoma. Similar problems are affecting Colorado, where a well was shut down after a small earthquake caused by an injection well in Weld County.

Idaho and Texas are among other states which have directly suffered from the practice.

In July this year, the USGS also released a report that predicted the number of states with earthquakes to double over the next 50 years. This prediction concerns events that actually cause damage.

From the color of foods to their fat content and nutritional value, there are facts about what we consume, their origin and manufacture which is not common knowledge and rarely promoted as truth. Here are 10 food facts that still surprise the majority.

 1. Orange Tomatoes May Be Healthier Than Red Ones

Usually, deep color in fruits and vegetables indicates abundant antioxidants - compounds that have been linked to heart and brain health - so it makes sense to consume produce with the deepest hues. But a study by Ohio State University researchers, published in the Journal of Agricultural Food and Chemistry, found that a variety of orange-colored tomatoes called Tangerine provided more readily available lycopene than did red tomatoes. Lycopene is an antioxidant that has been shown to reduce risks of cancer, cardiovascular disease and macular degeneration. Tangerine tomatoes are not available in grocery stores, but the researchers suggested that the advantage might extend to other orange- and gold-colored tomatoes.

2. Gelatin is Made From Cattle Hides and Pork Skins

Gelatin is used to make many desserts, such as jelly powders, marshmallows and frozen cakes. Gelatin is made from the collagen of animal skin and bones. Gelatin melts to a liquid state when heated, and solidifies when it cools. You may see gelatin form if you use animal bones to make your own soup stock and cool the broth.

Gelatin is the main ingredient in jelly powder. On its website, Kraft Canada states that the gelatin used in JELL-O is extracted only from cattle hides and pork skins, and only from the hides of healthy animals that have passed strict inspections and are found fit for human consumption. You do not recognize gelatin's taste as an animal product because, as Kraft says, "during the manufacturing of gelatin, chemical changes take place so that the final product, the composition, and the identity of the original material is completely eliminated." If you have chosen to follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, you may prefer to avoid eating products made with gelatin.


3. Consuming Eggs Regularly Does Not Boost Cardiovascular Risk

Americans have been urged to reduce egg consumption in the belief that eggs' high cholesterol levels contribute to coronary disease. We seem to have gotten the message: in 1943, per capital consumption was 402 eggs annually; by 2007, it was down to 253, a 38 percent decline.

But several large studies indicate that egg anxiety is unfounded. Most notably, a 1999 report from the Harvard School of Public Health (published in the Journal of the American Medical Association) that tracked 110,000 American adults for up to 14 years found no increased risk of coronary heart disease or stroke among healthy men and women who ate as much as seven eggs per week vs. those who ate less than one per week. There did, however, appear to be a correlation between high egg consumption and heart disease among diabetic men and women that "warrants further research" the authors concluded.

Many groups have also been against eggs due to allergies, especially for children. However, Pediatrician Fatima Arash, M.D., says that a high percentage of children can eliminate allergy sensitivities by incremental exposures to the allergen, especially eggs. "Under proper supervision, almost 70 percent of egg allergies can be reversed in children before the age of eight by incrementally exposing the immune system so that it gradually tames the defense mechanism and no longer reacts to antigens violently," she stated.

The only way to ensure you are buying a healthy egg is to visit the farm itself. Ensure farms practices are free of synthetic chemicals of any kind, free of genetically modified organisms in their feed and are producing soils of enhanced biological activity. Do not rely on the USDA organic label which has no interest in organic farming, improving soil, quality of the produce, or factors that pollute the environment.

4. Many Decaffeinate Teas and Coffees Are Manufactured Using Carcinogenic Solvents


Most countries permit three food additives for decaffeination of tea and coffee: carbon dioxide, ethyl acetate and methylene chloride. The last two are chemical solvents that strip the caffeine from green coffee beans or tea leaves. Green tea labeled as “naturally decaffeinated” may have been decaffeinated using carbon dioxide, whereas methylene chloride is more often used to remove caffeine from black tea or coffee.

Methylene chloride, or dichloromethane is recognized as possibly carcinogenic, and for this reason, many manufacturers have switched to using carbon dioxide or the Swiss Water process instead.  Of course, the methylene chloride is removed from the coffee or tea before it is packaged and sold, but knowing your tea or coffee has been processed using a carcinogenic solvent may influence your shopping choices.

Bottom line is if you're going to drink coffee, make it caffeinated.

5. Drinks Containing Hibiscus Are The Highest In Antioxidants

The tea made from hibiscus flowers is known by many names in many countries around the world and is served both hot and cold. The beverage is well known for its color, tanginess and flavor. A study conducted in Portugal found that drinks containing hibiscus exhibited the highest antioxidant activity compared to other beverages. The results were published in the Food Science and Technology Journal. A study in Food Research Journal showed that anthocyanins are a major source of antioxidant capacity in Hibiscus extract.

A 2008 USDA study shows consuming hibiscus tea lowers blood pressure in a group of prehypertensive and mildly hypertensive adults. Three cups of tea daily resulted in an average drop of 8.1 points in their systolic blood pressure, compared to a 1.3 point drop in the volunteers who drank the placebo beverage. Study participants with higher blood pressure readings (129 or above) had a greater response to hibiscus tea: their systolic blood pressure went down by 13.2 points. These data support the idea that drinking hibiscus tea in an amount readily incorporated into the diet may play a role in controlling blood pressure, although more research is required.

6. Crush Garlic, Then Wait 10 Minutes Before Cooking, To Maximize Health Benefits.

Argentinian researchers reported in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry that crushing garlic releases an enzyme, alliinase, that catalyzes the formation of allicin, which then breaks down to form a variety of heart-healthy organosulfur compounds. So crushed or chopped garlic, they reported, was potentially better for cardiac health than whole cloves.

Even more surprising, they noted that allowing the crushed garlic to stand for 10 minutes before cooking appeared to further enhance formation of those compounds. So when making a dish that contains garlic, crush the cloves first, and let them rest on the cutting board for at least 10 minutes while doing other prep work.

7. Salt Is Beneficial For Human Health

The pharmaceutical industrial complex has had great influence in scientific journals, medical literature and consequently Physicians in promoting the idea that salt is a baddy. Contrary to public perception, the reason the mantra of "eat less salt" has been advocated so strongly in decades past was due to the higher risk associated with cardiovascular disease which increased profits for pharmaceutical drugs.

Even a recent report commissioned by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) stated that salt is no longer considered a substantial health hazard. What the CDC study reported explicitly is that there is no benefit, and may be a danger, from reducing our salt intake below 1 tsp per day.

A recent study by researchers at the University of Glasgow has revealed that low chloride levels in the blood is an independent indicator of mortality risk in people with hypertension.

The key is to know the difference between a good salt and bad salt. Table salt is recrystallized where a brine solution is treated with chemicals that precipitate most magnesium and trace minerals. During the drying process, an anti-caking compound is added to the brine and these agents often use sodium ferrocyanide, tricalcium phosphate, calcium or magnesium carbonates, fatty acid salts (acid salts), magnesium oxide, silicon dioxide, calcium silicate, sodium aluminosilicate, and calcium aluminosilicate. The ferrocyanide and aluminosilicate compounds give the most cause for concern. And the iodization of salt, especially as it is used in processed food, poses real problems for those who are sensitive to iodine.

The problem is not salt, it's the type of salt we use. It takes just half an hour for one meal high in table salt to significantly impair the arteries’ ability to pump blood around the body, alarming research has shown. Blood flow becomes temporarily more restricted between 30 minutes and an hour after the food has been consumed.

8. Vanilla is Mildly Addictive and Blocks Bacterial Infections


The consumption of natural vanilla causes the body to release catecholamines (including adrenalin) -- for this reason it is considered to be mildly addictive.

Mayans used them to flavor chocolate drink centuries before Spanish first set their foot in Mexico. Ancient Mayans believed that vanilla drink was supposed to have aphrodisiac qualities.

When vanilla plants were first exported from Mexico to other tropical climes, they flowered but wouldn’t produce vanilla pods. It was discovered that a bee native to Mexico was the only creature that could pollinate vanilla flowers (vanilla comes from a special species of orchid). Attempts to move the bee to other countries failed and it was not until a slave boy discovered a method of artificial pollination that Mexico lost its monopoly on vanilla. As well as being mildly addictive, vanilla has also been found to block bacterial infections.

Natural vanilla extract contains numerous antioxidants, including vanillic acid and vanillin. Antioxidants protect your body from damage from harmful components, such as free radicals and toxins. Researchers in a 2007 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that vanilla extract contains 26 to 90 percent of the antioxidants of unprocessed vanilla, depending on the type of antioxidant and the concentration of the extract. They concluded that vanilla showed great potential as a health supplement and as a food preservative.

9. Chicken Contains 266% More Fat Than It Did Just 40 Years Ago

The research team, using data from a long-ranging study into mothers' diets, examined the content of chicken meat from 1970 compared to today. They found the fat content is now almost three times higher. Protein has dropped by almost a third.

In 1970 there was an average 8.6grams of fat per 100 grams of meat. Today there is an average of 22.8grams. Protein levels in 1970 were 24.3grams per 100 grams. Today it is a mere 16.5grams. Buying organic gives only slight protection from the extra fat but does protect the consumer from chickens fed genetically modified feed and antibiotic or hormone injections. A typical organic chicken has 17.1grams of fat per 100 grams. Like their battery-farmed counterparts, organic chickens are likely to live relatively sedentary lives compared to birds in the 1950s, 60s or 70s.

In the 1950s, chicken was regarded as a luxury, reserved for special occasions. By 1976, nutritionists were praising it for its low fat and high protein. In the 1980s, sales of pork, lamb and beef dropped as the message got through, and as health conscious consumers chose chicken the industry began factory farming techniques producing as many chickens as possible to feed the demand.

10. Long Before Carrots Were Domesticated, They Were Purple


Carrots were originally recorded as being cultivated in present day Afghanistan about 1000 years ago and were purple. Carrot cultivation spread to Spain in the 1100s via the Middle East and North Africa. Purple, white and yellow carrots were brought into southern Europe in the 14th century and were widely grown in Europe into the 16th Century. Purple and white carrots still grow wild in Afghanistan today where they are used by some tribesmen to produce a strong alcoholic beverage. Over the ensuing centuries, orange carrots came to dominate and carrots of other colours were only preserved by growers in remote regions of the world.

Nature then took a hand and produced mutants and natural hybrids, crossing both with cultivated and wild varieties. It is considered that purple carrots were then taken westwards where it is now known, through modern genetic research, that yellow varieties were developed to produce orange. Then some motivated Dutch growers took these "new" orange carrots under their horticultural wings and developed them to be sweeter, consistent and more practical.

North California must brace for major earthquake in near future - US Geological Survey

Four segments of the San Andreas fault system in Northern California are due for an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 or greater, including a section that runs near infrastructure crucial to water supply in much of the state, according to a geological study.

The Green Valley fault northeast of San Francisco between the cities of Napa and Fairfield is poised for a magnitude-7.1 earthquake or stronger, said researchers from the US Geological Survey and San Francisco State University responsible for the report.

The fault is located near dams and aqueducts that supply water from the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers to the San Francisco Bay area, Southern California, and the farm-heavy Central Valley. The Green Valley fault’s last quake happened “sometime in the 1600s,” AP reported.

The northern Calaveras and Hayward faults in the eastern San Francisco Bay area, as well as the Rodgers Creek fault to the north, are the other segments with enough built-up tension for a magnitude-6.8 or higher quake, the researchers found.

The study, published Monday in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, shows that California "needs to consider more seriously" the major earthquake risks in the region, James Lienkaemper, a US Geological Survey geologist and lead author of the study, told AP.

The four segments at risk are part of the San Andreas fault system, the point at which the western half of the state is moving northwest away from the rest of the United States land mass at a rate of about 2 inches per year.

In 2006, a study of the San Andreas system found that it was past due for a major earthquake, one at least magnitude 7.0, especially in the southern section of its reach. The southern region of the fault has not seen a massive quake for around 300 years, the study concluded.

"The information available suggests that the fault is ready for the next big earthquake but exactly when the triggering will happen and when the earthquake will occur we cannot tell [...] It could be tomorrow or it could be 10 years or more from now," said author Yuri Fialko, of the Institute of Geophysics and Planetary Physics of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego.

Researchers for the report released Monday gathered data in part from regular readings of fault lines taken by geologists and San Francisco State University students beginning in 1979.

These surveys measure fault creep, or movements over time that relieve strain on faults. If there is no fault creep, this indicates that a fault is locked and strain builds until an earthquake releases it. About two-thirds of the 1,250-mile San Andreas fault system shows fault creep, the study found.

In late August, a magnitude-6.0 earthquake hit the region, in the Napa Valley. Around 100 people were injured, mostly from stumbling on broken glass and other debris after the temblor hit before dawn on Aug. 24. At the time of the quake, officials speculated that costs from the damage would reach more than $1 billion.

The quake was the region’s largest in 25 years. On Oct. 17, 1989, the magnitude-6.9 Loma Prieta quake struck the San Francisco-Oakland area, killing more than 60 people, most from a freeway collapse.

In November of this year, movie theaters around the world will begin showing perhaps the year's most anticipated film, the science-fiction blockbuster, "Interstellar." The plot of the film features scientists on Earth devising a plan to send human beings through a wormhole, in a desperate effort to find a new, habitable system. But what is a "wormhole."
