As the search for Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 continues to absolutely
baffle investigators, explanations for what might have happened to the
flight have entered the realm of the supernatural. Astonishingly, the
Washington Post is now reporting
that smartphones of some passengers who boarded the flight are still
active and connected to the 'net even though the plane they were on has
vanished.
As WashPost reports:
One of the most eerie
rumors came after a few relatives said they were able to call the
cellphones of their loved ones or find them on a Chinese instant
messenger service called QQ that indicated that their phones were still
somehow online.
A migrant worker in the room said that several
other workers from his company were on the plane, including his
brother-in-law. Among them, the QQ accounts of three still showed that
they were online, he said Sunday afternoon.
Adding to the
mystery, other relatives in the room said that when they dialed some
passengers' numbers, they seemed to get ringing tones on the other side
even though the calls were not picked up.

A score of recent defense department and
other official documents warn that climate change, energy shocks and
economic crisis could trigger waves of civil unrest. The understanding
seems to explain the proliferation of security and surveillance programs
over the last decade.
The preparation makes sense from the
perspective of governments (four of which—the U.K., Canada, Australia
and New Zealand—appear to have been granted access to data collected by
the NSA spying program disclosed in recent weeks, as members of an
international intelligence alliance known as “Five Eyes”). The world can
unravel in at least three different ways. If and when it does, those in
power will want the means to keep their grip. Truthdig columnist Chris
Hedges has been warning us about this for a while now.
One legal military document grants
extraordinary powers to intervene in a domestic “emergency” or “civil
disturbance” outside of White House approval. A 2006 National Security
Strategy brief warned that “Environmental destruction, whether caused by
human behavior or cataclysmic mega-disasters … may overwhelm the
capacity of local authorities to respond, and may even overtax national
militaries, requiring a larger international response.”
Two years later, the defense department’s
Army Modernization Strategy described a soon-to-arrive “era of
persistent conflict” due to competition for “depleting natural resources
and overseas markets” fueling “future resource wars over water, food
and energy,” and predicting a resurgence of “anti-government and radical
ideologies that potentially threaten government stability.”
That same year, a report by the U.S. Army’s
Strategic Studies Institute warned that a series of domestic crises
could initiate large-scale civil unrest. “Under the most extreme
circumstances,” the report showed, Department of Defense action “might
include use of military force against hostile groups inside the United
States. Further, Dod would be, by necessity, an essential enabling hub
for the continuity of political authority in a multi-state or nationwide
civil conflict or disturbance.” Around the same time, the Pentagon
began developing a force of 20,000 troops who would be on hand to
respond to “domestic catastrophes” and civil unrest.
Of course there’s money in this game too.
Speaking before employees of Booz Allen Hamilton, the defense contractor
that formerly employed NSA whistle-blower Edward Snowden, Lt Col. Mark
Elfendahl, then chief of the Joint and Army Concepts Division, in 2010
described preparations for fighting in the homeland as a way to
legitimize the U.S. military budget.
Also in 2010, the Army’s annual Unified
Quest program—a yearly conference to determine how war should be waged
in the future—voiced expectations that “ecological disasters and a weak
economy” would fuel migration to urban areas, increasing social tensions
within the United States and between “resource-starved nations.”
The tragic irony here is that the U.S.
government’s foreign and domestic policies have created and continue to
create the conditions of violent unrest that both honest social critics
and war officials are expecting.
Nafeez Ahmed, the Guardian contributor who
deserves great credit for compiling excerpts from these documents for
the public, concluded his article on the subject by saying: “The
Pentagon knows that environmental, economic and other crises could
provoke widespread public anger toward government and corporations in
coming years. The revelations on the NSA’s global surveillance
programmes are just the latest indication that as business as usual
creates instability at home and abroad, and as disillusionment with the
status quo escalates, Western publics are being increasingly viewed as
potential enemies that must be policed by the state.”
The point is driven home in the examples of
the targeting of domestic activist groups, by government and private
industry in cooperation, below.
It is therefore not surprising that the
increasing privatisation of intelligence has coincided with the
proliferation of domestic surveillance operations against political
activists, particularly those linked to environmental and social justice
protest groups.
Department of Homeland
Security documents released in April prove a “systematic effort” by the
agency “to surveil and disrupt peaceful demonstrations” linked to Occupy
Wall Street, according to the Partnership for Civil Justice Fund
(PCJF).
Similarly, FBI documents confirmed “a
strategic partnership between the FBI, the Department of Homeland
Security and the private sector” designed to produce intelligence on
behalf of “the corporate security community.” A PCJF spokesperson
remarked that the documents show “federal agencies functioning as a de
facto intelligence arm of Wall Street and Corporate America.”
In particular, domestic surveillance has
systematically targeted peaceful environment activists including
anti-fracking activists across the US, such as the Gas Drilling
Awareness Coalition, Rising Tide North America, the People’s Oil &
Gas Collaborative, and Greenpeace.
... A University of Bath study ... based on
confidential sources, found that a whole range of corporations - such
as McDonald’s, Nestle and the oil major Shell, “use covert methods to
gather intelligence on activist groups, counter criticism of their
strategies and practices, and evade accountability.”
Global weather patterns seem to get stranger and stranger with each
passing year. Almost every day now, the news is telling us about some
bizarre weather event that hasn’t happened “in 100 years” going on in
some area of the globe. All over the planet, we are seeing torrential
rainfalls, unprecedented flooding, extreme drought, nightmarish
wildfires, record setting tornadoes and very unusual blizzards. Record
high temperatures and record low temperatures are set so frequently now
that nobody really seems to even notice anymore. So exactly what in the
world is going on here? Why does our weather seem to be going
absolutely crazy?
Perhaps even more important – can we expect our
weather patterns to become even more erratic? Some meteorologists are
suggesting that these unusual weather events are just an “anomaly” and
that things will get back to normal soon. But what if they don’t?
I noted that natural disasters seem to be increasing in both frequency and severity in my recent article entitled “Are We Entering The Worst Period For Natural Disasters In U.S. History?“
But it isn’t just the ground under our feet that seems to be becoming
more unstable. The weather patterns that we all take for granted and
that society depends upon seem to be rapidly changing.
The following are 22 signs that global weather patterns are going absolutely crazy…
1. Right now, central Europe is experiencing the worst flooding that it has seen in at least 70 years.
2. On Memorial Day weekend, a vicious winter storm dumped up to 36 inches of snow on parts of upstate New York.
3. Back in mid-May, on one single day
some parts of the UK had a couple of inches of snow, some parts of the
UK had a month’s worth of rainfall on a single day, and some parts of
the UK were hammered by winds of up to 65 miles per hour.
April has been a freakishly cold month across much of the
northern USA, bringing misery to millions of sun-starved and
winter-weary residents from the Rockies to the Midwest. “The weather map
… looks like something out of The Twilight Zone,” Minneapolis
meteorologist Paul Douglas of WeatherNation TV wrote on his blog last
week. Record cold and snow has been reported in dozens of cities, with
the worst of the chill in the Rockies, upper Midwest and northern
Plains. Several baseball games have been snowed out in both Denver and
Minneapolis. Cities such as Rapid City, S.D.; Duluth, Minn.; and
Boulder, Colo., have all endured their snowiest month ever recorded. (In
all three locations, weather records go back more than 100 years.) In
fact, more than 1,100 snowfall records and 3,400 cold records have been
set across the nation so far in April, according to the National
Climatic Data Center.
5. This year Saskatchewan had the coolest spring that it has experienced in 100 years.
6. Moscow just experienced the snowiest winter that it has seen in 100 years.
7. Snow is falling in Russia in places where it
should not be falling this time of the year. On Sunday, residents of
Kemerovo were stunned to see that a thin layer of snow had fallen on their city overnight.
8. This spring, there was a record amount of ice on the Baltic Sea due to very cold weather…
“Since record keeping began in the sixties, we’ve never
encountered anything like this before,” ice breaker Ulf Gulldne told the
local newspaper Örnsköldsviks Allehanda.
On March 29th, 176,000 square kilometers of the Baltic Sea was
covered in ice, a record for the time of year. On a map, it means about
half of the central and northern parts are frozen over. Far north, the
ice is both thick and difficult to break through.
9. The city of Anchorage, Alaska set a record for the longest snow season that it has ever experienced this year.
10. In February, hail the size of “boulders” pounded one poor city in southern India…
Hailstones the size of boulders have rained down on villages in southern India.
At least nine people were killed when the violent weather hit several villages in the state of Andhra Pradesh.
The hailstorm which lasted for almost 20 minutes, destroyed crops,
houses and live stock, causing devastating financial implications for
residents.
11. The tornado that touched down near Oklahoma City on Friday was the widest tornado ever recorded. It was an EF5 tornado that was 2.6 miles wide at one point with winds of up to 295 miles an hour.
12. The tornado that did such devastating damage to
Moore, Oklahoma recently was about 2 miles wide and it sat on the ground
for an astounding 40 minutes.
13. During the month of February, Peru, Chile and Bolivia were all hit by unprecedented flooding.
14. At the end of May, more than a foot of rainfall in 24 hours caused nightmarish flooding in San Antonio, Texas.
15. A few weeks ago, unusual levels of rainfall caused the Mississippi River to rise to near record levels.
16. This year the state of Georgia experienced the wettest February ever recorded.
17. Chicago just had the wettest April ever recorded.
18. Scientists are projecting that the nightmarish drought that is taking place in the western half of the United States will “intensify” this year.
19. Overall, hundreds of thousands of trees died throughout the United States during 2012 due to horrible drought conditions.
20. This past January, part of Australia experienced record setting high temperatures that were absolutely unprecedented. Keep in mind that the following temperatures are in Celsius…
Sydney endured its hottest ever day on Friday, with
records smashed across the city and thousands of people suffering from
the heat. The mercury topped 45.8 at Sydney’s Observatory Hill at
2.55pm, breaking the previous record set in 1939 by half a degree. The
city’s highest temperature was a scorching 46.5 degrees, recorded in
Penrith at 2.15pm, while Camden, Richmond and Sydney Airport all reached
46.4 degrees.
21. Over the weekend, extremely dry conditions were
making it difficult for firefighters to battle a very intense wildfire
in California that had already burned more than 20,000 acres…
By Sunday night, the Powerhouse Fire around the Angeles
National Forest in Southern California engulfed about 22,400 acres,
endangering some 1,000 homes in the Lake Elizabeth and Lake Hughes area.
Nearly 2,100 firefighters struggled to contain the fire, which more
than tripled in size from Saturday to Sunday. Nearly 3,000 people have
been evacuated and the blaze has already destroyed at least six homes by
Sunday night.
22. About 30 percent
of all honeybees are dying each year in the United States, and nobody
seems to know exactly why this is happening. If this continues, it
threatens to absolutely cripple U.S. agriculture…
US honey bees have been dying by the tens of millions,
with annual death rates of about 30 percent. With fewer bees to
pollinate fruits and vegetables each year, ‘beemageddon’ may soon cause
the collapse of the agriculture industry.
Honey bees pollinate more than 100 US crops, including apples,
zucchinis, avocados and plums, that are worth more than $200 billion a
year. Since 2006, about 10 million bee hives at an average value of $200
each have been lost in what scientists call the Colony Collapse
Disorder (CCD), according to a new report by the US Department of
Agriculture.
We certainly don’t need any more bad news about our agriculture. Global food supplies are currently at their lowest level in 40 years, and most people in the general public are absolutely clueless about what is going on.
Unfortunately, our weather has not just been unusual for the past few
months. This is a trend that has been developing for quite some time.

Especially lately. China is enduring its coldest winter
in nearly 30 years. Brazil is in the grip of a dreadful heat spell.
Eastern Russia is so freezing — minus 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and
counting — that the traffic lights recently stopped working in the city
of Yakutsk.
Bush fires are raging across Australia, fueled by a record-shattering heat wave. Pakistan was inundated by unexpected flooding in September.
A vicious storm bringing rain, snow and floods just struck the Middle
East. And in the United States, scientists confirmed this week what
people could have figured out simply by going outside: last year was the hottest since records began.
Indeed, “extreme has become the new commonplace” as far as our weather is concerned.
So will our weather get back to “normal” soon or are even greater changes ahead?
And what in the world is causing all of this?

Super aggressive mutant animals dominating the wild is not science fiction anymore.
Canadian scientists have determined that if genetically modified salmon
get into the wild, they will breed with wild fish and pass on their
modified genes. The study also showed that the mutant offspring proved
to be more aggressive than both the GM salmon and the wild fish.
The study published today in the Proceedings of the Royal Society
is the first of its kind to demonstrate environmental impacts of
hybridization between a GM animal and a closely related species.
The study determined:
Through experimental crosses, we demonstrate transmission of a growth
hormone transgene via hybridization between a candidate for commercial
aquaculture production, GM Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) and closely
related wild brown trout (Salmo trutta).
What's most interesting about this study is that the GM hybrids outperformed the original GM salmon as well as the wild trout.
Transgenic hybrids were viable and grew more rapidly than transgenic
salmon and other non-transgenic crosses in hatchery-like conditions. In
stream mesocosms designed to more closely emulate natural conditions,
transgenic hybrids appeared to express competitive dominance and
suppressed the growth of transgenic and non-transgenic (wild-type)
salmon by 82 and 54 per cent, respectively.
Dr Darek Moreau, from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, who conducted the study told the BBC
: "[Under hatchery conditions] the transgenic hybrids grew faster than
the wild salmon, wild trout and wild-type hybrids. The GM hybrids also
outgrew the GM salmon."
The mutant hybrids turned out to be more aggressive feeders than the GM
salmon and wild trout leading the researcher Dr. Moreau to determine the
growth rate "was likely a result of competition for limited food
resources."
Genetically modified salmon would be the first transgenic animal to be
allowed for human consumption, which is in the final stages of FDA
approval. But many fear exactly what this study shows, that the
engineered gene will mutate into nature.
Yet, AquaBounty, who filed for FDA approval of GM salmon, says there is
no way this could happen because their fish are not only engineered to
grow abnormally fast but also to be sterile.
"AquaBounty has stipulated that we will market only sterile, all female AquAdvantage salmon," said CEO Ron Stotish.
Didn't the genetic scientists in the fictional Jurassic Park movies use this same tactic?
The bigger concern for opponents of GM salmon is that once the door is
opened for genetically modified livestock, more mutant species will land
on the dinner plates without studies as to how they may affect human
health.
If we are what we eat, what will eating sterile fish and crops from sterile "terminator" seeds do to human reproduction?
The Hague, Netherlands - Today members of the Athabasca Chipewyan
First Nation (ACFN) and the Native Village of Point Hope, Alaska
attended the Royal Dutch Shell AGM to confront the Chairman and Board
over Shell’s decision to pursue highly risky ‘extreme energy’ projects
without adequate consultation and accommodation of Indigenous
communities. Projects such as Arctic off-shore drilling and tar sands
will have little long term benefit for the company, and expose it to
reputational damage, political and financial risk, including litigation.
“The ACFN leadership has made a commitment to protect our lands,
rights and people currently being threatened by tar sands development.
Our leadership has repeatedly tried exploring amenable agreements and
options with Shell regarding their current tar sands proposals for the
Jackpine expansion and the Pierre River mine projects. We want to work
directly with the company to adequately identify direct impacts and
solutions. However, Shell has repeatedly denied our requests and we have
been disappointed by their inability to make concessions to work with
us,” stated Eriel Deranger, member and Communications Coordinator of the
ACFN. “Today I brought forward our concerns to Shell’s Board about
current and proposed tar sands projects and the lack of adequate
consultation.[i] I sincerely hope the Board keeps its word to speak with
their Canadian president to address our concerns and potentially adjust
the environmental impact assessment process. If Shell continues to move
forward in project development without working directly with our
community it will continue to lead toward more delays in project
approvals, litigation and severe financial risk for Shell,[ii]”
continued Deranger.
Shell Oil Canada has put forward two new proposals in the Athabasca
tar sands. The Jackpine mine expansion application recently completed
the public review process and is awaiting approval May 31, 2013. The
Pierre River mine will be entering its public review process later this
year and the ACFN will continue to intervene to ensure the protection of
their lands, rights and vital waterways.
“Shell has been unaccountable and unresponsive for recent spills in
our community, which our community members have been monitoring and
testing. We live surrounded by 63 petro-chemical operators in 50 km
radius. Our health, culture and rights are severely impacted already and
we do not support tar sands refining or pipelines in our community. We
have our future generations to protect,” said Vanessa Grey, community
member of Aamwjiwnaang First Nation (AFN).
AFN is the proposed start for the highly contested tar sands Line 9
pipeline reversal and home to a Shell tar sands refinery. The pipelines
such as Keystone XL, Enbridge Northern Gateway and Line 9 are facing
massive public opposition, and look unlikely to be built soon. The price
of tar sands crude has dropped as a result.
Mae Hank, representative of Resisting Environmental Destruction on
Indigenous Lands (REDOIL), attended the AGM to to bring forward
concerns regarding Shell’s Arctic offshore activities.[iii] Litigation,
along with several other incidents has helped slow the rush to drill in
the Arctic but the Tribal communities remained concerned Shell has not
heeded these warnings.[iv]“Shell has stated that despite their current
‘pause’ in their Arctic offshore Alaska activities, the company is
committed to drill there again in the future,” she said. “As an Inupiat
Mother and Grandmother, I strongly oppose this plan, as do a majority of
Inupiat. There is still no viable spill plan in place not only for
cleaning up spills but how the company will compensate our community for
the loss of food and food security.[v] I asked the Chairman and the
Board to explain how they would compensate our community’s food security
and needs when the next major oil spill disaster happens. The Chairman
and the board simply danced around the question and did nothing to quell
my concerns.”
Despite being plagued with substantial problems throughout and after
the drilling season, Shell plans to continue its efforts for exploratory
drilling in 2014 in the Chukchi and Beaufort Seas. The company has
spent $4.5bn securing permits to drill in Arctic waters, however they
have been proven incapable of operating in the area. Shell’s experiences
should be a cautionary tale as decisions are made about whether to
authorize these activities in the future.

The climate of South Africa was once much wetter than it is today, and those lush
times may have spurred human populations through especially innovative
periods, new research shows.
Evidence from these ancient periods suggests humans produced new tools,
and used symbolism in wall engravings. The findings suggest a tight
link between abrupt climate changes and the emergence of modern human
traits, researchers say.
"We provide for the first time really good evidence that the occurrence and disappearance of these first finds of human innovations are linked to climate change," said study author Martin Ziegler, an earth science researcher at Cardiff University in Wales.
Before these periods of innovation, humans were quite primitive, with the most impressive technology being hand axes, Ziegler said. But during these wet periods, more advanced stone and bone tools appear in the fossil record, as well as painted
symbols on cave walls that suggest the development of language.
Archaeologists have also found some of the first evidence of
constructed plant beds during these periods, and shells thought to be
worn as adornments or jewelry, Ziegler said. Among the most important
periods analyzed in the study date to 71,000, and a period between
64,000 and 59,000 years ago. [Top 10 Mysteries of the First Humans]
In the study, Ziegler's team reconstructed South Africa's climate over
the last 100,000 years. They pieced together the record by analyzing
sediment cores taken from the offshore region near the southeastern tip
of Africa.
Chemicals within the sediment suggest how much rainfall fell nearby, Ziegler said, as well as other indicators of climate.
The climate reconstruction agrees with records from elsewhere in the
world. During these lush periods in South Africa, much of the rest of
Sub-Saharan Africa was experiencing a drought, while much of the
Northern Hemisphere was very cold, Ziegler said. The study suggests that
cold conditions in the north reoriented Atlantic Ocean currents,
shifting the global monsoon belt — with its torrential rains — to the
south, he said.
The study shows an association, but not a cause-and-effect relationship
between wetter conditions and human innovation. But it may be that
during these periods, drought farther north forced ancient humans into South African refuges, leading to a "bottleneck" of competition, and cross-cultural fertilization, Ziegler said.
Future work may look at the connection between human populations elsewhere, and local climate shifts.
But insights from these locations in South Africa are vital, because
they are thought to "reflect the emergence of modern behaviors of
innovation, language and cultural identity," the authors wrote in the
study, published today (May 21) in the journal Nature Communications.

What's black and red and heard all over? A cicada, of course.
The periodically appearing Magicicada, or 17-year locust, is due to rise up and break its silence along the East Coast of the United States this spring.
And as one of the world's loudest insects, cicadas are likely to make an entrance that will leave local ears ringing.
But why all the ruckus? After nearly two decades stuck underground, are
these bugs making all that noise just for sheer joy? No: Cicadas, while mysterious, have clear-cut reasons for their unusual habits.
The chirping and clicking noises of the male cicada are actually a species-specific mating call that can be heard by females up to a mile (1.6 kilometers) away.
But with one estimate putting the number of cicadas at 1 billion per
square mile, it's easy to understand why East Coasters might find this
cicada serenade anything but romantic.
Male cicadas produce their calls by rapidly vibrating a white, drumlike
plate, or tymbal, located on either side of their abdomens. A chorus of
lovesick cicadas can reach volumes greater than 100 decibels, which is
louder than a lawnmower at full bore.
Luckily for anyone needing a good night's sleep, these bugs usually
cease their racket by sundown. The cicada's group chorus also repels
birds that hunt by day, so when these insects stop singing, there's a
good chance the birds have gone to bed.
And if you're on the East Coast, then you should get some rest as well,
because this bug symphony is sure to last for several ear-splitting
weeks.
When we consider that the ionosphere surrounding our planet is
electrically positive charged whilst the earth’s surface carries a
negative charge, we must conclude that this amounts to a prevailing
electrical tension within the earth/ionosphere cavity. This tension is

earth’s surface. In this way the information can be transferred over
large distances.
The physicist and inventor Nikola Tesla was the first to carry out
wireless energy experiments at Colorado Springs, USA, which produced
such powerful electrical tensions that they resulted in the creation of
artificial lightning. These lightning flashes also produced radio waves.
Due to their extremely low frequency these waves could penetrate the
earth without resistance and thereby Tesla discovered the resonance
frequency of the earth. Unfortunately Tesla was before his time and his
discoveries were not taken seriously.
It wasn’t until more than half a century later in 1952, when the
German physicist Professor W.O.Schumann of the Technical University of
Munich predicted that there are electromagnetic standing waves in the
atmosphere, within the cavity formed by the surface of the earth and the
ionosphere. This came about by Schumann teaching his students about the
physics of electricity. During a lesson about ball condensers he asked
them to calculate the frequency between the inner and outer ball,
meaning the earth and ionosphere layer. They came up with a calculation
of 10Hz.

This was confirmed in 1954 when measurements by Schumann and König
detected resonances at a main frequency of 7.83 Hz. In the years
following this discovery, several investigators worldwide have
researched “Schumann resonance” and a number of properties and
characteristics have now been established.
Schumann Resonance Properties
The spherical earth-ionosphere cavity is created by the conductive
surface of the earth and the outer boundary of the ionosphere, separated
by non-conducting air. Electromagnetic impulses are generated by
electrical discharges such as lightning, the main excitation source, and
spread laterally into the cavity. Lightning discharges have a
“high-frequency component”, involving frequencies between 1 kHz and 30
kHz, followed by a “low-frequency component” consisting of waves and
frequencies below 2 kHz and gradually increasing amplitude. This
produces electromagnetic waves in the very low frequency (VLF) and
extremely low frequency (ELF) ranges.
ELF waves at 3 Hz to 300 Hz are propagated as more or less strongly
attenuated waves in the space between the earth and the ionosphere,
which provides a waveguide for the signals. Certain wavelengths
circumnavigate the earth with little attenuation due to the fact that
standing waves are formed within the cavity, the circumference of which
is “approximately equal to the wavelength which an electromagnetic wave
with a frequency of about 7.8 Hz would have in free space” (König, 1979,
p34). It is the waves of this frequency and its harmonics at 14, 20,
26, 33, 39 and 45 Hz that form Schumann Resonances.
On a global scale the total resonant spectrum is the effect of the
global lightning worldwide which is estimated at an average of 100
strokes per second. Since there is a concentration of lightning activity
during the afternoon in Southeast Asia, Africa and America there are
Schumann Resonance amplitude peaks at 10, 16 and 22 UT (universal time),
with activity over America around 22 UT being dominant.
There are also +/-0.5 Hz variations in the center frequency, caused
by a diurnal increase in ionization of the ionosphere as a result of
radiation from the sun, having the effect of reducing the height of the
ionosphere at 12 local time. Another factor which influences center
frequency is sunspot activity.
A Tuning Fork for Life
Although the existence of the Schumann Resonance is an established
scientific fact, there are very few scientists who are aware of the
importance of this frequency as a tuning fork for Life. I propose that
it is not merely a phenomenon caused by lightning in the atmosphere, but
a very important electromagnetic standing wave, acting as background
frequency and influencing biological oscillators within the mammalian
brain.
Natural electromagnetic processes in the environment (I-IV), human EEG

as well as locally conditioned fluctuations of the electric field (II)
and the EEG d-rhythm, show a noticable similarity in their temporal

At the time when Schumann published his
research results in the journal `Technische Physik’, Dr Ankermueller, a
physician, immediately made the connection between the Schumann
resonance and the alpha rhythm of brainwaves. He found the thought of
the earth having the same natural resonance as the brain very exciting
and contacted Professor Schumann, who in turn asked a doctorate
candidate to look into this phenomenon. This candidate was Herbert König
who became Schumann’s successor at Munich University. König
demonstrated a correlation between Schumann Resonances and brain
rhythms. He compared human EEG recordings with natural electromagnetic
fields of the environment (1979) and found that the main frequency
produced by Schumann oscillations is very close to the frequency of
alpha rhythms.
Dr König carried out further measurements
of Schumann resonance and eventually arrived at a frequency of exactly
7.83 Hz, which is even more interesting, as this frequency is one which
applies to mammals. For instance, septal driving of the hippocampal
rhythm in rats has been found to have a minimum threshold at 7.7 Hz
(Gray, 1982).

One of the foremost researchers in this field is Dr Wolfgang Ludwig,
who has been investigating Schumann Resonance and its place in nature
for many years.
The Research of Dr Wolfgang Ludwig
It was Dr Wolfgang Ludwig who carried out further measurements whilst
writing his thesis on the Schumann Resonance. His aim was to measure
what kind of natural signals actually exist in a healthy environment. He
became aware of the fact that due to manmade electromagnetic signals
within the atmosphere, the accurate measurement of Schumann waves was
almost impossible in the city. For this reason he decided to take
measurements out at sea where, due to good electrical conductivity, the
Schumann waves are stronger. He than had the idea to take underground
measurements in mines. Here he recognized that the magnetic field of the
earth fluctuated too. This was also investigated by Dr Robert Becker in
his book `Electricity and Vitality: The spark of Life’.
Dr Ludwig came up with an excellent idea to take accurate
measurements. When taking measurements at the earth’s surface, the
reading is the result of two signals, one coming from above and one from
below. But subsequently taking measurements below ground makes it
possible to come up with exact readings by separating the two.
YIN and YANG
During his research Dr Ludwig came across the ancient Chinese
teachings which state that Man needs two environmental signals: the YANG
(masculine) signal from above and the YIN (feminine) signal from below.
This description fits the relatively strong signal of the Schumann wave
surrounding our planet being YANG and the weaker geomagnetic waves
coming from below, from within the planet, being the YIN signal
The Chinese teachings state that to achieve perfect health, both
signals must be in balance. Dr Ludwig found that this is indeed the
case. He writes in his book `Informative Medizin’ that research carried
out by E.Jacobi at the University of Duesseldorf showed that the one
sided use of Schumann (YANG) wave simulation without the geomagnetic
(YIN) signal caused serious health problems. On the other hand, the
absence of Schumann waves creates a similar situation. Professor R.Wever
from the Max Planck Institute for Behavioural Physiology in
Erling-Andechs, built an underground bunker which completely screened
out magnetic fields. Student volunteers lived there for four weeks in
this hermetically sealed environment. Professor Wever noted that the
student’s circadian rhythms diverged and that they suffered emotional
distress and migraine headaches. As they were young and healthy, no
serious health conditions arose, which would not have been the case with
older people or people with a compromised immune system. After only a
brief exposure to 7.8 Hz (the very frequency which had been screened
out), the volunteers health stabilized again.
The same complaints were reported by the first astronauts and
cosmonauts, who, out in space, also were no longer exposed to the
Schumann waves. Now modern spacecrafts are said to contain a device
which simulates the Schumann waves.
All the aforesaid points to the fact that the ancient teachings are
correct. Mankind depends on two subtle environmental signals, the Yin
from below and the Yang from above.
The urgent need for further research into the Schumann Resonance Effect
Although Schumann Resonance could easily be confirmed by measurements
at the time of its discovery, it is no longer so obvious due to our
atmosphere being filled with manmade radiation noise at different
frequencies. This is almost drowning out the natural signals – signals
that have been there through aeons of evolution. It is possible that
these signals act like a natural tuning fork, not just for the
biological oscillators of the brain, but for all processes of life.
With the advent of new wireless technology, in particular microwaves
pulsed at frequencies close to Schumann Resonance as in mobile
telephony, another threat is emerging. We may be creating an environment
that is literally `out of tune’ with Nature itself. And it is at this
point that there is an urgent need for us to understand how everything
alive responds to the most subtle changes in magnetic and
electromagnetic fields surrounding us. For instance, we need to examine
the possible interaction between magnetite crystals within cells and
manmade magnetic fields in the environment.
There is a great need for independent research into the
bio-compatibility between natural and manmade signals. By linking
together the potential importance of Schumann Resonance and the dangers
posed by manmade pulsed frequencies, it will become apparent that unless
we find a way to use bio-compatible signals to power new technology, we
may expose all life to dangers previously not encountered. We may have
to pay a high price for this shortsightedness. Serious attention must
now be paid to the possible biological role of standing waves in the
atmosphere, so that we do not overlook the importance of oscillations in
nature that may be central to consciousness and life itself.
The late Dr Neil Cherry, a fierce opponent of the frequencies used in
mobile telephony, has also focused on the importance of Schumann
Resonance in his publications ‘Schumann Resonances, a plausible
biophysical mechanism for the human health effects of Solar/Geomagnetic
Activity’ (2002), and ‘Human intelligence: The brain, an electromagnetic
system synchronised by the Schumann Resonance signal’ (2003).
If organisms do in fact respond to, and perhaps depend on,
electromagnetic fields as weak as that produced by Schumann resonance at
0.22-1.12 mV/m (from Cherry, 2002), this is of major significance for
the development of present and future wireless technologies. Funding for
research projects investigating the Schumann Resonance Effect is now
being sought and scientists who support this call for research are
invited to contact by e-mail.

Thousands of years ago, an ancient
civilization raised a circle of huge, roughly rectangular stones in a
field in what is now Wiltshire, England. Stonehenge, as it would come to
be called, has been a mystery ever since.
Building began on the site around 3100 B.C. and continued in phases up
until about 1600 B.C. The people who constructed the site left no
written records and few clues as to why they bothered to schlep the
stones to this spot.
Wild theories about Stonehenge
have persisted since the Middle Ages, with 12th-century myths crediting
the wizard Merlin with constructing the site. More recently, UFO
believers have spun theories about ancient aliens and spacecraft landing
pads.
But Stonehenge has inspired a fair number of scientifically reasonable
theories as well. Here are five major (and not necessarily mutually
exclusive) reasons Stonehenge might exist.
1. A place for burial
Stonehenge may have originally been a cemetery for the elite, according
to a new study. Bone fragments were first exhumed from the Stonehenge
site more than a century ago, but archaeologists at the time thought the
remains were unimportant and reburied them. Now, British researchers
have re-exhumed more than 50,000 cremated bone fragments from where they
were discarded, representing 63 separate individuals, from Stonehenge.
Their analysis, presented on a BBC 4 documentary on March 10, reveals
that the people buried at the site were men and women in equal
proportions, with some children as well.
The burials occurred in about 3000 B.C., according to study researcher
Mike Parker Pearson of the University College London Institute of
Archaeology, and the very first stones were brought from Wales at that
time to mark the graves. The archaeologists also found a mace head and a
bowl possibly used to burn incense, suggesting the people buried in the
graves may have been religious or political elite, according to The Guardian newspaper.
2. A place for healing
Another theory suggests that Stone Age people saw Stonehenge as a place
with healing properties. In 2008, archaeologists Geoggrey Wainwright and
Timothy Darvill reported that a large number of skeletons recovered
from around Stonehenge showed signs of illness or injury. The
archaeologists also reported discovering fragments of the Stonehenge
bluestones - the first stones erected at the site - that had been
chipped away by ancient people, perhaps to use as talismans for
protective or healing purposes.
3. A soundscape
Or perhaps Stonehenge's circular construction was created to mimic a sound illusion.
That's the theory of Steven Waller, a researcher in archaeoacoustics.
Waller says that if two pipers were to play their instruments in a
field, a listener would notice a strange effect. In certain spots, the
sound waves from the dual pipes would cancel each other out, creating
quiet spots.
The stones of Stonehenge create a similar effect, except with stones,
rather than competing sound waves, blocking sound, Waller reported in
2012 at the annual meeting of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science. Legends associated with Stonehenge also
reference pipers, Waller said, and prehistoric circles are traditionally
known as "piper stones."
Waller's theory is speculative, but other researchers have confirmed that Stonehenge had amazing acoustics.
A study released in May 2012 found that the circle would have caused
sound reverberations similar to those in a modern-day cathedral or
concert hall.
4. A celestial observatory
No matter why it was built, Stonehenge may have been constructed with
the sun in mind. One avenue connecting the monument with the nearby
River Aven aligns with the sun on the winter solstice; archaeological
evidence reveals that pigs were slaughtered at Stonehenge in December
and January, suggesting possible celebrations or rituals at the monument
around the winter solstice. The site also faces the summer solstice
sunrise, and both summer and winter solstices are still celebrated there
today.
5. A team-building exercise
Or perhaps Stonehenge was something like an ancient team-building
exercise. According to the University College London's Pearson, the
beginning of the site's construction coincides with a time of increased unity
among the Neolithic people of Britain. Perhaps inspired by the natural
flow of the landscape, which seems to connect summer solstice sunrise
and winter solstice sunset, these ancient people may have banded
together to build the monument, Pearson suggested in June 2012.
"Stonehenge itself was a massive undertaking, requiring the labor of
thousands to move stones from as far away as west Wales, shaping them
and erecting them," he said in a statement. "Just the work itself,
requiring everything literally to pull together, would have been an act
of unification."

A book that gave cause for thought in1970, Alvin Toffler’s Future Shock,predicted
some difficult tomorrows. Toffler presented clear evidence of how the
speed of change had increased drastically as human progress pushed
forward.
One couldn’t help being impressed by Toffler’s observation that more
changes have taken place in the past 2000 years than in the 200,000
years before that, and that more changes have occurred in the last 200
years than in either the previous 2000 years or 200,000 years.
What’s shocking about this is the realization that we no longer have a
generation for our children to adapt to change. Speed itself compels a
change in the rate of decision-making and, as Toffler says, “all
decision systems have limits as to how fast they can make complex
decisions.”
Though Alvin Toffler was by no means the first person with an
interest in futuristic thinking, he was the first modern writer to make
people aware of the importance of future studies.
Futurist Michael Findlay offered an interesting story about people missing Toffler’s ideas:
At a dinner party held for the Chinese ambassador in the late
1970s, Toffler found himself seated with the top executives from NBC and
RCA. Since it would be unlike him not to take advantage of such access,
he asked them how broadcasting would be different five years hence.
Both smiled languidly and assured Toffler there would be no major
changes.
They, like everyone else who would lose their jobs in the years
ahead for not seeing the approaching third wave, saw a future of fine
tuning and incremental adjustments. Amidst the tremendous upheaval of
our times, they were asleep at the wheel and proud of it.
Combination of data from NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope and
observations by amateur astronomers has produced one of the best images
yet of nearby spiral galaxy Messier 106.
Located a little over 20 million light-years away, practically a
neighbor by cosmic standards, Messier 106 is one of the brightest and
nearest spiral galaxies to our own.
Despite its appearance, which looks much like countless other
galaxies, Messier 106 hides a number of secrets. Thanks to the new
image, they are revealed as never before.
At its heart, as in most spiral galaxies, is a supermassive black
hole, but this one is particularly active. Unlike the black hole at the
center of the Milky Way, which pulls in wisps of gas only occasionally,
Messier 106’s black hole is actively gobbling up material.
As the gas spirals towards the black hole, it heats up and emits
powerful radiation. Part of the emission from the center of Messier 106
is produced by a process that is somewhat similar to that in a laser —
although here the process produces bright microwave radiation.
As well as this microwave emission from Messier 106’s heart, the
galaxy has another startling feature — instead of two spiral arms, it
appears to have four.
Although the second pair of arms can be seen in visible light images
as ghostly wisps of gas, as in this image, they are even more prominent
in observations made outside of the visible spectrum, such as those
using X-ray or radio waves.
Unlike the normal arms, these two extra arms are made up of hot gas
rather than stars, and their origin remained unexplained until recently.
Astronomers think that these, like the microwave emission from the
galactic center, are caused by the black hole at Messier 106’s heart,
and so are a totally different phenomenon from the galaxy’s normal,
star-filled arms.
The extra arms appear to be an indirect result of jets of material
produced by the violent churning of matter around the black hole. As
these jets travel through the galactic matter they disrupt and heat up
the surrounding gas, which in turn excites the denser gas in the
galactic plane and causes it to glow brightly.
This denser gas closer to the center of the galaxy is tightly-bound,
and so the arms appear to be straight. However, the looser disc gas
further out is blown above or below the disc in the opposite direction
from the jet, so that the gas curves out of the disc — producing the
arching red arms.

2013 could be the Year of the Comet. Comet Pan-STARRS is set to become a
naked eye object in March, followed by possibly-Great Comet ISON in
November. Now we must add to that list green Comet Lemmon (C/2012 F6).
"Comet Lemmon is putting on a great show for us down in the southern
hemisphere," reports John Drummond, who sent us a picture from Gisborne,
New Zealand: "I took the picture on Jan. 23rd using a 41 cm (16 in)
Meade reflector," says Drummond. "It is a stack of twenty 1 minute
exposures."
That much time was required for a good view of the comet's approximately 7th-magnitude coma ("coma"=cloud
of gas surrounding the comet's nucleus). Lemmon's green color comes
from the gases that make up its coma. Jets spewing from the comet's
nucleus contain cyanogen (CN: a poisonous gas found in many comets) and
diatomic carbon (C2). Both substances glow green when illuminated by
sunlight in the near-vacuum of space. Discovered on March 23rd 2012 by
the Mount Lemmon survey in Arizona, Comet Lemmon is on an elliptical
orbit with a period of almost 11,000 years. This is its first visit to
the inner solar system in a very long time.
The comet is brightening as it approaches the sun; light curves suggest
that it will reach 2nd or 3rd magnitude, similar to the stars in the Big
Dipper, in late March when it approaches the sun at about the same
distance as Venus (0.7 AU). Northern hemisphere observers will get their
first good look at the comet in early April; until then it is a target
exclusively for astronomers in the southern hemisphere. - Space Weather
